28 Sep 2008 FTFC Ladies 2 - 2 Winchester City(League)
Farnham will be kicking themselves that they allowed Winchester back into this match. Dominant in posession, Farnham paid a heavy price for switching off, allowing Winchester back into a game which had seemed comfortable until then. Originally leading through a fantastic finish from Charlie Powell, Farnham showed good determination to recoiver from 2 - 1 down, Powell again supplying the finish with a sublime chip over the keeper.
21 Sep 2008 Andover New Street 9 - 1 FTFC Ladies (League)
A poor display from a weakened FTFC side. Despite pegging Andover back for a period with the scores at 2 - 1, Farnham ran out of steam and allowed Andover to control the match.
14 Sep 2008 FTFC Ladies 6 - 5 Christchurch (League)
Farnham pick up three points inthe opening match of the season against an under strength Christchurch. Goal from Marchant, Hoblyn and Powell were just enough to carry the game.

17 Feb 2008 Hayling United 1 - 4 FTFC Ladies (League)
Farnham Town Ladies beat a much improved Hayling United 4 – 1, away in their final league match of the season, on Sunday 17th February.
With only the bare 11 available, this looked to be a stern test, but Farnham’s last game of what has been a tough season saw them eventually run out 4 – 1 winners. Comfortable as the score line was, Hayling certainly gave Farnham a game, and even took the lead in the first few minutes. After surviving a couple of very early scares, Hayling must have been as surprised as anyone when they were gifted a goal as captain Debbie Wood, so solid throughout her time as stand in keeper, failed to clear a routine ball. Charged down by the Hayling forward, the ball took a wicked deflection to end up in the net, and 1 – 0 to Hayling on 3 minutes.
In truth, Wood was rarely troubled after that, and dealt comfortably with everything on Hayling’s rare forays forward. At the opposite end, her counterpart was to prove far the busier keeper over the 90 minutes, and like the last time these two sides met she was to be Hayling’s outstanding player, pulling off a number of great saves to keep the score respectable.
If nothing else, the early goal at least caused Farnham to focus, and they quickly clicked into gear, drawing level on 8 minutes when Katie Cook, playing up front, picked up a short pass on the edge of the area, worked her way into space and finished accurately at the near post with a firm, well placed shot. With the season winding down it looks like the ‘chairs’ exercise is finally paying off…! This was a 3rd goal in as many games for Cook, who has found her shooting boots, adding goals to her excellent form.
Cook was to test the keeper a few more times in the action that followed, as Hayling were forced to defend ever deeper. With only one up front, they were finding it hard to escape from their own half even when they managed to get possession, and they paid the price on 31minutes when Charlie Powell reacted first to a flick on from Cook, beating the keeper with a powerful shot from the right. Farnham led 2 – 1.
Powell gave the Hayling defence a tough afternoon, and was constantly probing down the left, frequently released by searching balls from both Helen Slater and Lora Hodgkinson, playing at the back.
Five minutes later Nicole Hoblyn nearly added another, capitalising on confusion in the Hayling defence to send a rasping shot just over.
Just before half time Hayling almost got reward for their persistence, when a stumble from Slater saw their centre forward favourite to win the ball and go through on goal. Steff Dalton was quick to snuff out the danger, though, sweeping across to claim the ball, ride the challenge and confidently work room to bring it out of defence.
This was a good illustration of much of the match. Although Farnham pretty much controlled the game, it was built on the performance of a defensive unit, who were all working well. In particular, Dalton again had an immense performance, and her physical presence and pace meant she slammed the door shut on a number of promising moves. Her appreciation of the centre half role has grown through the season, and she’s added the confidence to move forward with the ball, linking up play well in the middle of the park with simple, snappy passes.
The second half saw a more positive Hayling, and they managed to put some pressure on Farnham, without creating too many opportunities. Wood was called into action a couple of times to field through balls, but in general Farnham were stifling any attacks 25 yards from goal.
At the other end, Charlie Powell brought a fine finger tip save from the Hayling keeper after a deep cross found her unmarked just inside the box, and Steff Dalton drove a shot just wide from a corner. Chances were starting to come quite regularly, and Nicole Hoblyn could have extended the advantage in the 62nd minute, heading just wide when well placed, and then flashing a left foot shot narrowly past the post.
Finding she had a spare couple of moments and a bit of breath left, Charlie Powell managed to talk herself into a booking with a referee who’d been fairly lenient up until that point. This was only a brief respite for Hayling, however, as Megan Powell made a well coached run to the far post to meet a square ball across the face of goal, coolly steering it home for her first goal of the season and 3 – 1 to Farnham on 74 minutes. A great finish from a player who has been plagued by injury all season (typical Spurs), but still put in some vital performances.
Lisa Cooper, who’d struggled in the middle of the park with a mysterious headache inducing ailment(!), swapped with Katie Cook to move up front, and immediately began to see more of the ball, using her pace to test the Hayling defence and going close a couple of times. On 84 minutes she sprung the offside trap, only to see her firm shot from the edge of the box beat the keeper but strike the upright. Following up, Nicole Hoblyn was first to the rebound and hammered the ball into an empty net for 4 – 1 Farnham.
Despite a couple of late chances, Farnham were content to see the game out, and it finished 4 – 1. Farnham retain 2nd spot in the league, but their closest rivals still have a few games in hand. It would take something very special to knock them off this spot, but only time will tell…
This has been a very tough season for Farnham, who have had to cope with a lot of injuries, leading to an unsettled side. In particular, with both keepers sidelined for almost the whole season, Debbie Wood has done a fantastic job stepping in, and all credit must go to her for marshalling a solid defence.
Well done to all of you – a great finish to the season and no more than you deserve!

10 Feb 2008 Widbrook United 2 - 1 FTFC Ladies (League)
Farnham Ladies Lose to Widbrook
Farnham Town Ladies slumped to a 2 – 1 defeat away to Widbrook on Sunday 10th February.
This was a disappointing performance from Farnham in their penultimate match of the season. With the finish line in sight, a poor game from Farnham saw them fail to take advantage of the many opportunities they created.
Starting strongly, Farnham had Widbrook pinned back into their half, but despite this there was a distinct lack of urgency from Farnham, who had the air of a team who were just waiting for something to happen.
With most of the possession, and all of the chances, Farnham could have expected to be comfortably in front, but instead some wayward, lacklustre finishing, and a good performance form the Widbrook keeper kept the scores level. When both Megan Powell and Nicole Hoblyn hit the bar with firm strikes, the signs were ominous that this wasn’t going to be Farnham’s day.
Taking heart from the near misses, Widbrook started to play some neat football, with most things going through their number 10, who proved to be a real handful for the Farnham defence. One quick break saw her spring the offside trap, only to lift her shot over the bar when through on goal.
The warning lifted Farnham for a while, and they increased the pressure on Widbrook, carving out numerous chances without making the most of them, until Katie Cook curled a firm shot past the keeper on 33 minutes for a1 – 0 lead. The approach play from Mel Miles and Steff Millington, combined with good footwork in the box from Emily Marchant, showed what Farnham are capable of, and they continued to carve out chances. When Nicole Hoblyn controlled a ball well and turned it round the corner for Marchant to race past the defender, iy looked odds on for 2 – 0. Uncharacteristically, after what has been another excellent season, Marchant drove her shot over the bar.
Going into half time at 1 – 0, Farnham knew they hadn’t taken anywhere near enough advantage, and had left the door open for a Widbrook comeback.
The 2nd half saw a revitalised Widbrook start to express themselves, linking up far better than they had and forcing Farnham to defend more often. The game was turning into a more end-to-end affair, with Farnham keeper Debbie Wood finally called into action, sweeping up well behind the defence on a couple of occasions when Widbrook sprung the offside trap.
Farnham were still creating the better chances, but frustration was starting to creep into their play and some good chances were snatched at when in reality they should have stretched their lead. They were to get an object lesson in how cruel football can be if you don’t take advantage when you’re on top. Losing possession from their own hurried throw, Farnham were caught on their heels as Widbrook broke with the ball. A static defence could only watch as Widbrook raced through to equalise with what could well have been their first shot on target in the 69th minute.
The goal seemed to stun Farnham, and although they still seemed the stronger the play was becoming more ragged. In reality a point was all Farnham needed, but in searching for the winning goal they left themselves exposed at the back. Widbrook took full advantage when a hopeful clearance up field seemed to be completely under control, only for a breakdown in communication between keeper and defender to allow the Widbrook winger to race onto the loose ball and finish well for a 2 – 1 lead in the 80th minute.
Things were to get almost immediately worse for Farnham when a heavy tackle outside the Widbrook box left Steff Millington with a broken bone in her foot. Claire Hull took over the keepers gloves as Woods moved into midfield to help search for the equaliser. Despite a number for chances in the dying minutes, Farnham still found that final product elusive, and Widbrook were able to see the game out 2 – 1.
A more clinical effort in front of goal, and some cooler heads around the pitch could easily have seen Farnham win this game, but all credit to Widbrook who continued believing, playing on the break and taking the chances they got.

03 Feb 2008 Gosport Ladies 0 - 9 FTFC Ladies (League)
Farnham Ladies Storm to a Comfortable Win at Gosport
Farnham Town Ladies beat Gosport Ladies 9 – 0 for their biggest win of the season on Sunday 3rd February.
Farnham’s results have been improving game-on-game over the course of the season, and a strong, confident squad travelled to Gosport on a very cold, windy day looking for a decisive win to keep pressure on Eastleigh at the top of the table.
The last time these teams met Farnham ran out 4 – 2 winners in a hard fought competitive game. But things have changed since then, and Gosport are propping up the foot of the table, struggling for goals.
Kicking off into the teeth of a howling gale, Farnham took only two minutes to open their account. A quick throw from Helen Slater, who had another excellent match, was flicked on by Nicole Hoblyn to Charlie Powell. Powell’s driven ball across the face of goal found Lisa Cooper storming in at the far post to finish calmly for her first of the season and 1 – 0 Farnham.
A couple of minutes later Farnham could have doubled their advantage, a great ball from Cooper splitting the Gosport defence for Emily Marchant, who was denied by a brave save from the onrushing keeper. Despite the eventual score line, the Gosport keeper generally had a good game. Over the course of the afternoon she was to deny Marchant in a succession of one-on-ones, something almost no other keeper has managed this season. All credit to her for a brave display.
If it was frustrating for Marchant, others were struggling to find their range as well, and time and again some great approach play was let down by wayward finishing. The weather obviously had a part to play, but Farnham were disappointed not to stretch their advantage before they did. Charlie Powell nearly found the net with a firm shot that drifted just wide, and a cleverly worked free kick between Lora Hodgkinson and Katie Cook saw Cook’s shot curly away from 25 yards.
At this stage of the game Cook was involved in everything, and another opportunity came her way on 27 minutes, when a rocket of a strike from 20 yards just flew over the crossbar. She wasn’t to be denied for long, though. A minute later, in exactly the same position, she neatly sidestepped a challenge from the Gosport full back, switching the ball to her left foot and curling it away from the keeper into the side of the net for the sweetest of finishes and 2 – 0 Farnham.
On 36 minutes Lisa Cooper nearly spoiled what was a man of the match performance, getting caught up in a handbags stand-off with the Gosport right back. Luckily for both of them, the referee merely gave them a lecture and advice about future behaviour, when they must have feared the worst. Cooper was to give Gosport problems throughout the game, her first 90 minutes for over 18 months after coming back from injury. Quick feet and some excellent work on the wing was at the heart of some of Farnham's best play.
Up front Nicole Hoblyn and Emily Marchant were combining well, keeping Gosport pinned back and forcing them into mistakes. These two are striking up a good partnership, and Hoblyn was the first to benefit from her all-energy display. Working the ball across the line, Cook laid the final ball off to Hoblyn, just inside the corner of the box. Hoblyn’s first time shot with her left was perfectly placed, curling around the keeper and just inside the far post for 3 – 0 on 40 minutes.
Farnham had time for one more chance just before the whistle. A good advantage played by the referee after Marchant was unceremoniously shoved off the ball saw Charlie Powell in space to crack a shot just wide.
The half time team talk for the Farnham manager was a straightforward affair. With the wind now in their favour, all Farnham had to do was use the space available and pepper the goal with shots. With Gosport barely able to clear their lines in the teeth of the gale, the game was compressed into the Gosport third, and Farnham took full advantage.
A few early chances in and around the box went begging, and when Helen Slater stepped out from the back on 64 minutes to sweep up a clearance, Gosport must have thought the danger had passed. But Slater looked up, saw the keeper off her line and used the wind to perfect effect, looping a shot from 35 yards over the keeper and into the back of the net for 4 – 0. A fantastic way to open your account for the season and a well deserved goal.
Just over a minute later Emily Marchant got the reward she deserved for all the hard yards she’d covered, once again working her way free in the box and this time making no mistake, sliding the ball in for a 5 – 0 lead.
Strangely, the next 7 or 8 minutes were probably Gosport’s best of the match. With their number 10 pulling the strings, they started trying to take the game to Farnham, opening up more and playing some neat football. Despite this, they were unable to test captain Debbie Wood in goal, and if anything it played into Farnham’s hands. Exploiting the space that was now available, Charlie Powell was working her way into some good positions on the wing, and she was rewarded with the first of her three goals when a ball into the near post was fumbled by the unfortunate Gosport keeper, dropping it over the line for 6 – 0.
Steff Millington, recovered from her ankle injury, came on for Hoblyn, and immediately started causing problems with good, intelligent possession. Sian Boniface, on for Marchant, took a leaf from Slater’s book, and struck a fantastic shot from 25 yards into the top corner for a 7 – 0 lead on 80 minutes.
Gosport’s should be given credit for continuing to battle for most of the game, despite chasing lost causes, and it was probably only at this point that their heads really went down. Charlie Powell took full advantage, scoring her second when the exposed keeper failed to hold a fiercely struck cross which was moving in the wind. If that one was slightly fortunate, there was nothing lucky about her third. Stepping into the box, she unleashed a howitzer of a shot that almost snapped the upright as it cannoned in at the far post. Farnham led 9 – 0 on 88 minutes.
There remained just enough time for Megan Powell to nearly open her account for the season, but she just unable to latch onto a ball played across to the far post. Even Emma Legg, not known for her goal scoring, tried to get in on the act with a couple of decent long range efforts well saved by the keeper.
This was a thoroughly deserved win for Farnham, who remain second in the table, 2 points off the lead. They’ll be looking to carry this momentum into their last two league games.

27 Jan 2008 FTFC Ladies 3 - 0 Horndean (League)
Farnham Ladies Repeat Winning Performance Against Horndean
Farnham Town Ladies beat Horndean 3 – 0 for the second time in January at the memorial Hall Ground on Sunday 27th January.
Farnham have played some excellent football this season, and the development across the board has been obvious, particularly on the wide open spaces of the Memorial Hall pitch. Yet for all their progress, Farnham can still sometimes show that the final piece isn’t quite in place, failing to finish off teams early when they have the chance.
A 3 – 0 score line looks comfortable, but in truth it could, and should, have been much more. This is a game that Farnham were in complete control of, with the majority of the game in Hordean’s half, but a 1 – 0 lead at half time was testament to a host of rushed approach play and missed chances.
A strong Farnham line up started the game well enough, with the forward pairing of Emily Marchant and Nicole Hoblyn immediately testing the Horndean defence. A precise through ball from Katie Cook, starting in the middle, put Hoblyn through for the first effort on 3 minutes, but her firmly struck shot was wide of the upright.
At this point Farnham were playing some excellent passing football, maintaining pressure in and around the box, stretching the Horndean defence. When it came the goal was a classic team effort. Playing the ball out from the back, Charlie Powell collected wide on the left and drove forward, playing a one-two off Marchant. The cross into the box found Hoblyn, who had timed her run perfectly to hit a firm shot goal ward. The Horndean keeper managed to get both hands to the shot, but was unable to hold it, and Hoblyn was first to react to the loose ball, bundling it over the line for 1 – 0 on 15 minutes.
This should have been the cue for the floodgates to open, but Farnham were guilty of relaxing too much. Although they kept up almost constant pressure, the 1- man Horndean defence wasn’t worked hard enough, with Farnham narrowing the play far too much when space was beckoning out wide.
With Farnham’s defence not seriously troubled, Megan Powell at right back was given liberty to get forward, overlapping with Lisa Cooper and trying to force the game. For the second week in a row she gave a player of the match performance, solid in defence when required but also acting as play maker further forward. She was very nearly rewarded with a first goal of the season on the 20 minute mark, when she drove through the Horndean defence only to see her shot go just wide of the post.
Going into half time, the frustration was becoming evident in Farnham, and their short game was starting to suffer as they became too anxious to get the second. Efforts from Mel Miles, Katie Cook and Lisa Cooper could have eased nerves, but the Horndean keeper had found her feet and was making some decent saves.
Farnham came out for the second half with more purpose, and an early free kick from Lora Hodgkinson could have brought the second goal, but a good clearance off the line from the Horndean centre back denied her.
Having gone 3-4-3, with Megan Powell pushed into right wing and Lisa Cooper moving up front, the game was compressed into Horndean’s half. In some respects this may have helped Horndean, as they could play tight with 10 behind the ball and not worry about being stretched. Farnham were finding it difficult to unpick their defence, although a great cross from Megan Powell saw a Charlie Powell diving header go just wide.
When Emily Marchant was taken down on the edge of the box, Katie Cook was ordered to step up, and her thundering free kick from 20-yards was just tipped over the bar by the Horndean keeper. From the corner, Charlie Powell delivered the perfect ball into a waiting Hoblyn, who guided her firm header into the back of the net for Farnham to take a 2 – 0 lead on 55 minutes.
Farnham continued to play attacking, passing football, with Marchant, Miles, Hoblyn, Charlie Powell and Megan Powell seeing their attempts saved or deflected. Another rasping Cook shot from 10 yards left the Horndean keeper with stinging palms, and was probably the save of the match.
On 80 minutes Gemma McKeown, on for Cooper, followed the Manager’s half time instructions, and found herself unmarked at the back post to calmly turn in a cross shot for 3 – 0 to Farnham.
Largely untroubled in goal, Debbie Wood was called into action to punch clear a corner as Horndean belatedly rallied and exerted some pressure. Content to see the game out, Farnham slipped back into a more defensive 4-4-2, with Emma Legg on for Mel Miles and Sian Boniface replacing Emily Marchant up front.
At times Farnham played some good passing football, but overall the performance wasn’t their best. Credit has to go to Horndean’s defence, though, as they gave it everything to frustrate the Farnham attack.
The result keeps Farnham in 2nd place in the table.
Final Score Farnham Town Ladies 3 - 0 Horndean Ladies

20 Jan 2008 FTFC Ladies 1 - 6 Chelsea Ladies (Surrey Cup 1/4 Final)
Farnham Ladies Show Too Much Respect to Chelsea Ladies
Farnham Town Ladies took on the 5 times winners in the ¼ final of the Surrey Cup on Sunday 20th January. The experience of the visiting Chelsea team showed through with a final score of 6 – 1 to Chelsea.
Farnham had been drawn as the away team, but with the Chelsea pitch flooded the game was re-arranged to the Memorial Hall ground. The weather was kinder than forecast, and Farnham met Chelsea in front of a large crowd for their first game against Premiership opposition.
It’s fair to say that Chelsea proved to be comfortably the best team Farnham have faced this season, and the final score line reflected the away team’s dominance. Farnham approached the game cautiously, with a deep lying 4 – 4 – 2 formation set up to play in a classic minnows against giants Cup formation, looking to absorb pressure and hopefully play on the counter attack. If anything, though, this gave Chelsea too much respect, and meant that some of Farnham’s most incisive players didn’t see enough of the ball to really hurt the opposition.
It all started brightly for Farnham, with some early possession, but a quick move through midfield saw Steff Millington heavily tackled on the edge of the Chelsea area, just as she looked to have worked her way clear. The tackle left Millington carrying an ankle injury through the rest of the match. In the absence of a replacement midfielder she did well to last the course.
The injury proved to be quite a problem, and Chelsea took advantage, overloading the midfield with 5 players and starting to dominate possession. Making good use of the wide players, a succession of balls into the box caused Farnham some problems, although the back line, marshalled by Lora Hodgkinson, seemed to hold up well. Stepping up as a unit, Chelsea were denied an opener when the linesman flagged yet again for offside.
In a rare venture forward, Farnham worked the ball up the line, but the attack broke down again on the edge of the Chelsea box. In truth, a little more conviction could have reaped rewards, but instead it was Chelsea who took the lead. A cleared corner was floated back in by the Chelsea wide player, and the miss hit cross deceived keeper Debbie Wood, dropping over her to find the back of the net on 20 minutes. 1 – 0 Chelsea.
The goal was a blow, but Farnham responded well, continuing to battle as much as possible in midfield, and relying on the solid back line of Megan Powell, Steff Dalton, Lora Hodgkinson and Katie Cook to take care of anything that broke through. Powell in particular gave a player of the match performance, and kept her composure time and again when faced with the pacey Chelsea forwards. The rest of the season should seem easy after this!
Farnham even managed to work a couple of opportunities, with both Emily Marchant and Charlie Powell testing the Chelsea defence. In truth, though, the Chelsea keeper wasn’t tested, but at 1 – 0 Farnham still had a chance.
Chelsea were becoming increasingly frustrated as their dominance failed to reap a reward, but on 40 minutes they finally sprung the offside trap, racing through to coolly finish and make it 2 – 0. At this point Farnham would have been happy to hear the half time whistle, but a moment’s lapse in concentration let Chelsea through again for a 3 – 0 lead in time added on, leaving Farnham with a mountain to climb.
Chelsea came out strongly for the 2nd half, again dominating the possession and play. Wood tipped a shot over the bar, and made a great diving save to keep the ball out from the resultant corner. The fourth goal was only a matter of time, but Farnham will be very disappointed with the manner in which they conceded. Having fought for everything, Farnham stood off a Chelsea midfielder as she carried the ball, and Wood found herself one on one. With no support from the Farnham defenders, Wood stood up well, but she was eventually rounded and the ball was walked into the net with no Farnham player within 10 yards. 4 – 0 to Chelsea.
Chelsea played confidently, showing some nice football. Their use of the space and ability to retain possession was a sound lesson, and in truth they were good to watch. On the hour Chelsea worked the line and put in another cross which for the 2nd time in the game ended up in the net. 5 – 0 to Chelsea.
Farnham re-jigged the formation, bringing on Sian Boniface up front and pushing Lisa Cooper wide right where she could see more of the ball. The change paid almost immediate dividends. Receiving a short pass from Mel Miles, Cooper neatly stepped around a couple of challenges and played the ball forward for Marchant, splitting the Chelsea defence. Marchant’s clever run into the box took her across the Chelsea defender, whose cynical pull back was well spotted by the referee. Marchant composed herself and stepped up for the penalty kick, coolly slotting the ball past the Chelsea keeper for 5 – 1 to Chelsea on 73 minutes. Farnham deserved the goal, if not least for the effort they’d put in, and Marchant showed great nerve to tuck it away in the manner she did.
A couple of minutes later Woods was unable to tip another Chelsea shot over the bar, and it found the net for 6 – 1 to Chelsea.
Farnham kept going, with Helen Slater on at left back and Katie Cook pushed forward into midfield, and managed to put together a few attacking moves. A Farnham free-kick by Lora Hodgkinson was just too short and found the arms of the Chelsea keeper.
Chelsea continued to work the Farnham defence, with Emma Legg on for a tiring Cooper, but couldn’t improve on their score before the final whistle. This was a good experience for Farnham, against an impressive well drilled Chelsea side with some real flair players.
A respectable performance, and final score, but Farnham could perhaps have shown a little more of their usual controlled, attacking football. Given the chance again, and some self-belief, they may even fancy their chances…!

13 Jan 2008 FTFC Ladies 4 - 2 Gosport Borough Ladies (League)
Farnham Town Ladies took on league contenders Gosport Borough Ladies on Sunday 13th January on a heavy pitch at the Farnham Memorial Ground, and battled well against strong opposition for a 4 – 2 win.
Geoff Chapple and his team have worked wonders on a Farnham pitch that traditionally suffers more than most in wet weather, but their hard graft has paid off and on a day of curtailed fixtures Farnham Ladies vs. Gosport Borough was the only match in the league to be played. Although heavy, the pitch has stood up well to the rigours of they season so far, and provided a decent surface for two of the leagues promotion contenders to show their stuff.
Farnham Ladies were looking to avenge the away defeat to Borough back in October, and a win was vital to keep promotion hopes alive. With games in hand, Borough lie in 3rd, just behind Farnham, so this had all the makings of a season defining game.
Farnham were without top scorer Emily Marchant for this crunch match, so Lisa Cooper got her first start of the season, playing up alongside Nicole Hoblyn in a basic 4-4-2. Steff Dalton was restored to Centre Back alongside Lora Hodgkinson, with an in-form Gemma McKeown again taking up a berth on the right of midfield. Captain Debbie Wood put on the keeper’s gloves once more, with both Claire Hull and Lucie Spooner still out injured.
Farnham have been a little slow out of the blocks on occasion, and despite the importance of the fixture this game was another example. Borough were the livelier from the whistle, and looked likely to give Farnham a testing afternoon. The ladies have a growing confidence, however, and woke up quickly, taking the game to Borough and forcing them backward into a more defensive formation.
With Mel Miles and Steff Millington linking well and pulling the strings in midfield, Farnham started creating chances. A couple of early shots from Nicole Hoblyn forced saves from the Borough keeper, who looked to be in fine form, and Lisa Cooper was showing some great touches and pace to torment the Borough defenders.
Gosport Borough were far from out of it, though, and played well on the counter, bringing a couple of easy saves from Wood with long range efforts. Despite this, the balance of play was definitely with Farnham, and with Hoblyn, Cooper and Charlie Powell causing constant problems, it looked only a matter of time before they opened the scoring, despite the Borough keeper’s performance.
When another fine move culminated in Cooper and Hoblyn rounding the keeper Farnham thought they were sure to score, but Hoblyn’s shot from 18 yards was too weak on the heavy pitch and the Gosport Borough centre half raced back to clear off the line.
In an unfortunate twist, Megan Powell, who was having yet another solid game at right back, picked up a groin strain and had to be withdrawn. With Chelsea up next in the cup she’ll be looking for a swift recovery. Helen Slater came on to slot in at centre back, and Steff Dalton moved into Powell’s position, where she’s played a couple of times before this season.
One of football’s unwritten rules is that you have to take advantage when you’re on top, and Farnham were given a stark reminder of just that on 34 minutes. A well worked ball from midfield split the Farnham defence, and Lora Hodgkinson was forced into a last minute covering tackle. The referee, who overall had a fine game, called it as a foul. It looked a harsh decision, and Hodgkinson was adamant that she collected the ball first, but the decision stood. The resultant free kick was struck beautifully, and caught by the wind managed to just deceive keeper Wood to find the top corner of the net. Borough led 1 – 0.
Farnham have rarely been behind this season, and it only served to galvanise them into an almost immediate response – the sign of a confident team. From the kick off they again tested Borough, eventually winning a corner which was whipped in by Charlie Powell. Mel Miles, ghosting into the box, crashed a shot against the bar, and Hoblyn was on hand to head the ball home from 8 yards to level the score. A really well taken goal that was no more than her performance to that point deserved.
With Borough rocked, a rampant Lisa Cooper and Gemma McKeown both had further attempts on goal before the half-time whistle, denied again only by the Borough keeper.
The Farnham manager may be reviewing his half time team talks after what happened next. Despite hammering home the point that they had to be awake from the whistle, it seemed Farnham were still in the changing room when Borough scored almost from the kick off. A simple ball into the box should have been cleared, but the otherwise impressive Katie Cook could only block a cross which should never have reached her, and it fell to a Borough forward. The ball was switched left quickly, and a decent snap shot from just inside the area beat Wood to make it 2 – 1 Borough on 46 minutes.
Farnham had a torrid 10 minutes as Borough applied pressure, and struggled to clear their lines as they faced a dangerous series of throws and corners. This was a difficult test for Farnham, but Hodgkinson and Wood managed to keep the defence marshalled well enough to prevent any real threat on goal.
Borough are a well coached team, and they kept the pressure on, with Farnham struggling to get the ball out of their half and put together a serious attack. But with the talent they have in the team, it was only going to be a matter of time before they got a foothold back in the game. Mopping up one last attack, Cook swept the ball forward to Powell, whose strong shot drifted just wide of the post. With Cook starting to push forward from left back and linking with Millington and Miles in the midfield, they again worked pace for Powell, who raced beyond the full back to stroke the ball over the dive of the advancing keeper and level the scores at 2 – 2 on 55 minutes.
On the right McKeown brought a good save with a fiercely struck shot from an acute angle, and set up chances for each of Hoblyn and Cooper.
The breakthrough came on 64 minutes, as Mel Miles hooked a high ball forward. Hoblyn was strong enough to win possession against both a Borough defender and keeper, controlling the ball instantly and stroking it into the net for a 3 – 2 lead to Farnham.
Gosport Borough weren’t done, though, and they came back immediately, forcing a good save from Wood in the Farnham goal.
With Sian Boniface on for a tiring Cooper, and Emma Legg taking over from McKeown on the right, Farnham were keeping a good grip of the game, though. Katie Cook was finding more and more space, driving the game up the pitch and overlapping well with Powell to keep probing the Borough defence.
On 84 minutes, a quick ball inside found Steff Millington with time and space just outside the box, and she composed herself perfectly, driving in a low shot to beat the keeper at the near post for a 4 – 2 lead.
The end-to-end action continued right to the whistle, with Helen Slater and Lora Hodgkinson providing good clearances from Gosport attacks, and Woods easily taking a long shot. Hoblyn still fancied her chances at a hat-trick and had another couple of shots, but couldn’t find the net before the final whistle.
Farnham play Chelsea away in the Surrey Cup quarter final on 20th January, before going away to Hayling United in the league on 27th January.

06 Jan 2008 Horndean 0 - 3 FTFC Ladies (League)
Farnham Ladies Continue Winning Form
A very wet December meant a frustrating 6 weeks without a match for Farnham, who had just run into some decent form. A trip away to Horndean Ladies for the first game of the New Year brought a welcome return to competitive football, and with Horndean just 2 points behind Farnham it was important to put in a winning performance. As so often this season, Farnham had a few players missing, but a controlled, deserved 3 – 0 win was a tribute to the depth of talent now in the squad.
Horndean were an unknown quantity for Farnham, the two sides having never met before. On a sloping, heavy pitch Farnham opted for a slightly cautious 4 – 4 – 2, with Helen Slater restored to the centre of defence alongside Lora Hodgkinson, Nicole Hoblyn pushed up front alongside Emily Marchant and Gemma McKeown slotting in at right wing. Mel Miles and Steff Millington provided the bite in midfield, with both putting in some strong challenges in a dominant performance.
Farnham started the better, playing some neat passing football and Nicole Hoblyn had the first shot of the game, a well struck drive from the left of the box which went just wide of the post. Farnham continued to dominate, with shots from Lora Hodgkinson, Emily Marchant and Nicole Hoblyn, but failing to find the back of the net.
The constant pressure eventually told, and on 20 minutes Charlie Powell took a good deep corner, delivering the ball toward the back of the box for Hoblyn to plant a firm header back across the keeper into the corner of the net for Farnham to take a deserved 1 – 0 lead. This was a very well taken forward’s goal from Hoblyn, who put in another man of the match performance.
With Horndean firmly on the back foot, Farnham pressed their advantage. Driving through from midfield, Mel Miles had a good shot saved, before Katie Cook teamed up down the left wing with Hoblyn, who struck a firm left foot shot across the face of goal for Emily Marchant to slot into the net at the foot of the post to take a 2 – 0 lead.
Farnham’s midfield continued the half strongly, with Katie Cook overlapping from left back and shooting just wide, and the keeper saving another good shot from Marchant.
Horndean mostly tried to build through their number 3, mainly working down the left side of midfield. In another solid performance, though, Megan Powell gave a master class in how to keep someone in your pocket, making sure that the Horndean player was always under pressure when receiving the ball, regularly forcing her backward or stealing possession and launching a counter attack. Another impressive, cultured performance from Powell that must have given her opponent a very frustrating afternoon.
The game wasn’t all one way, and Horndean had some decent patches of possession, working some good positions. In general, though, the well-marshalled Farnham defence were stronger in the tackle all the way across the back line, and most Horndean attacks would break down 25 yards from goal, with keeper Debbie Wood being untroubled.
Just before half time Farnham were awarded a free kick after a foul in the middle of the park. Hodgkinson took it early, an inch perfect ball finding Charlie Powell in space on the edge of the area. Powell controlled instantly, stepped inside the challenge of the full back and slammed a pile driver of a shot into the back of the net from a narrow angle for Farnham to go in at half-time with a 3 – 0 lead.
Horndean came out more determined at the start of the 2nd half, and showed some early intent with a free kick that drifted just wide of goal. Farnham were working well as a team, though, with Megan Powell and Marchant linking together up the line to play in Steff Millington, whose first time shot from the edge of the area flashed past the post.
The long lay off started to take its toll, and the football became scrappier as both teams tired. On the break, Horndean managed to work a good ball into the box, forcing keeper Wood to make an inspired save at the feet of the striker. Despite this, Farnham remained the stronger side, and up front substitute Lisa Cooper could have extended the advantage, some great approach work deserving of a goal that just wouldn’t come.
In the end, Farnham were content to see the game out and take the three points from a hard fought win.
Farnham play league contenders Gosport Borough at home on Sunday 13th January, before going to Chelsea in the Surrey Cup quarter final on 20th January.

25 Nov 2007 FTFC Ladies 2 - 1 Eastleigh (League)
Farnham Ladies Take Points Off League Leaders
Farnham Town Ladies were the first team to beat Division 2 leaders, Eastleigh, this season, with a 2 – 1 win at the Memorial Ground on Sunday 25th November.
Farnham went into the game needing a win to keep pressure on the top two teams, and their positive approach to the game paid dividends as they beat league leaders Eastleigh with an impressive, controlled display.
Reverting to a traditional 4-4-2, Farnham moved Nicole Hoblyn to right wing to take advantage of her pace, and with Sian Boniface starting up front to help hold the ball up and link play from the midfield they put Eastleigh under immediate pressure. A fine through ball from Hoblyn could have seen on-form Emily Marchant open the scoring as early as the first minute, but her well hit shot was pushed wide by the Eastleigh keeper.
The reprieve didn’t last long, however, and a couple of minutes later Boniface brilliantly worked room in the box from a throw in, slamming the ball into the top of the net from the tightest of angles to take a 1 – 0 lead. The ferocity of the shot left the keeper with no chance, and it set the tone for the pace and intensity of Farnham’s play for the next 20 minutes.
Eastleigh must have feared the worst, and faced with a free-flowing, attacking Farnham they barely got beyond the half way line. With Mel Miles pulling the strings in midfield and Eastleigh pinned back, FTFC created a number of gilt edged chances. But for some profligate finishing and a good display from the Eastleigh keeper the game could have been as good as over.
FTFC have always had a touch of the Jekyll and Hyde’s about them, though, and with a comfortable afternoon looking on the cards they took their foot off the gas – a cardinal sin against a team as good as Eastleigh. Top for a reason, they seized the initiative and quickly forced FTFC into a defensive position. Were once the football was controlled, aggressive and direct, Farnham were hurried into clearances, defending too deeply and conceding a series of corners. From the final one of these, a well delivered ball caused some confusion in the box, and the ball was scrambled over the line for the equaliser on 32 minutes. Farnham will be disappointed with both the manner in which the corner came about and their failure to clear the ball off the line.
Eastleigh carried on taking the game to Farnham, moving the ball well and creating space, but they mostly relied on long range shots, comfortably fielded by captain Debbie Wood in goal. Farnham restructured slightly, dropping Lora Hodgkinson deeper into the defensive sweeper role, bringing Katie Cook, Steff Dalton and Megan Powell in tighter as an effective back three unit and using Charlie Powell on the left and Nicole Hoblyn on the right as wing backs. The change worked well, and Farnham forced themselves back into contention, repeatedly testing the Eastleigh defence with some probing attacks down both sides. On 41 minutes Marchant counter attacked quickly, rippling the side netting with a shot which should perhaps have tested the keeper, and seconds later seeing an audacious attempt at a chip drift just wide. A goal looked inevitable, though, and if there’s ever a good time to score it’s just before the break. A panicked clearance from Eastleigh could easily have found their own net, but from the resultant corner a battling Nicole Hoblyn forced the ball home from close range to regain the lead 2 -1 in the 44th minute.
The second half was a more even affair, although Farnham created the better chances. Boniface saw another shot go just wide, and Mel Miles forced a good diving save from the keeper, while Eastleigh were mostly restricted to long range efforts that were easily fielded by Woods. Eastleigh are a fit, strong 2nd half team, however, and Farnham had to be constantly alert – Hoblyn, Dalton and Cook in particular putting in some strong performances to deny Eastleigh progress.
On 60 minutes Farnham brought on Lisa Cooper for the tiring Boniface, who'd had an impressive game up front. Making only her second appearance of the season and her first up front after nearly 18 months out through injury, with only 10 minutes football under her belt since then, Coops could have been forgiven for easing her way into the game. Instead she was on the pace immediately, forcing Eastleigh backwards with some great runs and touches, constantly attacking at pace with the ball. A couple of fabulous last minute tackles in the box were all that stopped her from registering her first goals of the campaign.
With Roxy Coles and Helen Slater replacing the tiring Emily Marchant and Steff Millington, who had both covered a huge amount of ground, Farnham were able to keep up the pressure, releasing Mel Miles to carry the ball with real intent on a number of occasions. The only disappointment will be that they couldn’t convert one of the chances into another deserved goal.
After a hard fought game, the final whistle came as a relief to both teams, and on balance Farnham’s more fluent attacking football and solid defence deserved to carry the points as it finished 2 - 1. A great result for the ladies.
Farnham play Widbrook away on 2nd December, and Gosport away on 9th December, before hosting Corinthian Casuals at the Memorial Ground in the Surrey Cup on 16th December.

11 Nov 2007 Shanklin 0 - 4 FTFC Ladies (League)
Farnham Turn the Tables
A dominant, controlled game from Farnham who eagerly took the early opportunity to respond to last weeks defeat at home to the same Shanklin team, running out 4 – 0 winners.
A changed line up saw Nicole Hoblyn join Emily Marchant up front to provide extra pace, and captain Debbie Woods take up the gloves in goal. A fully fit Megan Powell slotted in at right back, with Steff Dalton adding real bite to the centre of defence alongside Lora Hodgkinson. Mel Miles and Emma Legg joined forces in the middle, with Steff Millington providing width on the right and Charlie Powell on the left.
After a poor showing at home last week against the same Shanklin team, Farnham were determined to return the favour and came out of the blocks quickly, pinning Shanklin into their own half. For 10 minutes it was all one way traffic, with Farnham forcing a succession of corners and half-chances. At this early stage Shanklin were relying on some robust defending and what eventually turned into a man of the match performance from their experienced keeper to keep them in it.
Despite the pressure Farnham were unable to create a clear chance, and as is the way with these things they started to lose some momentum. Having weathered the initial storm, Shanklin began to make inroads of their own, playing some neat approach football through the midfield and trying to work angles. The Farnham defence unit was playing with renewed confidence though, and comfortably dealt with any danger, providing the springboard for counter attacks. Katie Cook in at left back was linking well with Charlie Powell down the wing, and Powell was using her pace to torment Shanklin, taking every opportunity to attack the full back and commit players.
Strangely, though, the breakthrough when it came was through the middle. Farnham worked the ball up field, and a final pinpoint pass saw Emily Marchant racing between the centre backs for what looked like a certain goal, only to be obstructed just inside the box. From the indirect free kick, Charlie Powell tapped the ball to Lora Hodgkinson who smashed a thunderous drive past both the wall and the keeper before either had time to move. Steven Gerrard-like in its power, the strike gave Farnham a deserved 1 – 0 lead which they carried comfortably through to half-time.
The second half followed the same pattern as the first, with Farnham constantly probing for an opening. Shanklin were retreating further into their half, and with 10 men behind the ball most of the time creating opportunities was difficult. Gemma McKeown came on to provide some extra pace down the right, and her first contribution nearly paid dividends. Skipping away from a challenge on the line, McKeown drove forward, whipping in a cross that Emily Marchant met with a decent header, only to see the well positioned keeper again gather the ball.
The second goal was only a matter of time, and another cross from McKeown broke free on the far side for Charlie Powell to drive a low cross back across the face of goal. Under tremendous pressure from Nicole Hoblyn, who gave a full blooded performance up front, the Shanklin centre back could only turn the ball over her own line for 2 – 0 Farnham on 65 minutes.
Sian Boniface came on for Hoblyn to help hold the ball up front, and a few minutes later Emily Marchant put any remaining doubts to rest, drifting past the Shanklin defenders to calmly stroke the ball past the keeper for 3 – 0 on 70 minutes.
With 15 minutes to go, Farnham had to reorganise when Katie Cook took a blow to the head and was forced to retire. With no subs available, 10-man Farnham moved Emma Legg to left back and dropped Boniface back into the midfield. The changes unsettled Farnham for a while, and Shanklin took the initiative, putting sustained pressure on the revamped back line. Working hard for each other, Farnham managed to restrict Shanklin to long range efforts, with keeper Woods comfortably fielding a number of shots. Shanklin’s best effort, a dipping shot from 25 yards, clipped the top of the bar on the way through, although keeper Woods would say she had it covered...
Reacting to the pressure, Farnham dropped Marchant back into the midfield, and pushed Boniface up front with instructions to play off the last man and hold the ball up. With 5 minutes to go, the tactic paid dividends. A quick ball from the back reached Boniface, who held off the challenge and flicked the ball round the corner for Marchant to score the goal of the season so far. Racing through from midfield, Marchant sprinted clear and as the keeper advanced she glanced up and at full speed casually chipped over and into the net from 30 yards. A magnificent finish to take Farnham through to full time and a well deserved 4 – 0 victory against a good Shanklin team.

04 Nov 2007 FTFC Ladies 3 - 5 Shanklin (League)
Farnham Under Perform
Overall a poor first half performance left Farnham Town Ladies with too much to do as they lost 5 – 3 at home to Shanklin, Sunday 4th November.
The game started fairly evenly, with both midfields performing well and creating chances, testing each others defences very early on.
Mel Miles had the first chance for Farnham, making an early run forwards only to see the ball gathered well by the Shanklin keeper. Farnham kept the pressure on, winning a corner on the left for Lora Hodgkinson to swing into the box. A Farnham shot was headed off the line before Charlie Powell met the loose ball and slammed it into the net for Farnham to take a 1 – 0 lead on 5 minutes.
For a period Farnham continued to play well, with some good passing football. Sian Boniface managed to work some space and had a good shot saved by the keeper.
After that the half took a turn for the worse, and 30 crazy minutes saw a previously solid Farnham defence concede 5 goals for the first time in the league. The first came on 9 minutes, with Shanklin finding time and space to chip Claire Hull in goal to even the score at 1 – 1. With their confidence increasing Shanklin attacked again and two minutes later managed to chip a well positioned Hull again to take the lead 2 – 1.
A Farnham free kick brought some brief respite, with Lora Hodgkinson levelling the score from 22 yards, putting the ball past the keeper for 2 – 2 on 16 minutes.
Shanklin immediately went back on the attack, playing the ball out from the back. Farnham didn’t get back quickly enough and Shanklin took the lead again at 3 – 2 on 20 minutes.
They had the bit between the teeth now, and continued to build the pressure. Keeper Hull got her hands to a well struck free kick, but was unable to keep it out of the net. Farnham found themselves 4 – 2 down with 20 minutes of the half to play, and heads were dropping.
Trying to grab back the initiative, Powell made a good run down the wing, crossing to Emily Marchant in the box. Marchant went round a Shanklin defender and calmly put the ball in the net, only to see the goal was disallowed for an apparent foul in the box. Then on 33 minutes Shanklin were awarded another free kick, causing confusion on the line with a ball Farnham were unable to clear and a 5th goal was conceded on 33 minutes.
This was to be the last goal Shanklin scored as, strangely, Farnham belatedly woke up and started to play football again, putting Shanklin under pressure for the remainder of the half. Charlie Powell was particularly strong in the mid-field but Farnham couldn’t find the net.
Farnham started the 2nd half stronger, dominating the play and possession. Substitute Nicole Hoblyn had a shot rebound off the cross bar, and Hodgkinson had a free-kick go just wide of the post. Powell and Cook had further shots saved.
Hodgkinson delivered another good free-kick, which Steff Millington struck well but the Shanklin keeper made a great save. Farnham’s persistence paid off on 73 minutes, with Katie Cook putting the ball past the keeper for 5 – 3 to Shanklin.
Farnham were the stronger team through-out the second half, with several shots on target, but the Shanklin keeper was able to clear them all.
The final score was Farnham Town Ladies 3 – 5 Shanklin. Overall Farnham’s performance was average, and they will look to do better at the return game in Shanklin on Sunday 11th November.

28 Oct 2007 FTFC Ladies 0 - 1 Eastleigh (Hampshire Cup)
Farnham Lose Out in Cup
Farnham Town Ladies conceded in the 87th minute to lose 1 – 0 to Eastleigh in the 2nd round of the Hampshire County Women’s League Invitation Cup.
In an evenly matched game on a wet Sunday afternoon, a much changed Farnham met top of the league Eastleigh in the Hampshire Invitation Cup. With three first-choice defenders and both regular strikers missing, Farnham had to shuffle the pack, bringing in new signing Nicole Hoblyn up front with Sian Boniface, and using midfielders Katie Cook, Steff Millington and Mel Miles as a makeshift defence alongside regular centre back Helen Slater.
The early exchanges set the tone for most of the match, with the sides fairly evenly matched. Farnham created a few early openings, Debbie Wood and Charlie Powell linking up down the left wing to force Eastleigh into a hurried clearance, and Nicole Hoblyn and Gemma McKeown testing them down the right. Eastleigh had chances of their own, working space behind the Farnham back line and bringing a good save low down from keeper Lucie Spooner.
At the other end, a good cross from Hoblyn was only cleared as far as Katie Cook, whose solid shot was just wide from 20 yards.
The rain slicked surface was making control difficult, but Farnham played some good passing football, improving on recent performances and working some good openings. Boniface, Powell, Cook and Hoblyn all had shots at goal, but failed to really test the keeper. At the other end, Eastleigh also put several shots wide from good positions. The score at half time was Farnham 0 – 0 Eastleigh, with the game in the balance.
Eastleigh came out attacking in the 2nd half, forcing some good defending from Mel Miles, Helen Slater, Katie Cook and Steff Millington. Farnham also turned up the pressure, but were unable to break through. Both teams were playing some good football, with end-to-end action, but no final shot finding the net.
With 5 minutes to go Farnham seemed to be the stronger team, with several attacking moves, but were frustrated not to convert some clear chances.
Then on 87 minutes the Farnham defence failed to clear a ball first time, and a weakly struck shot from the Eastleigh forward wrong footed keeper Spooner. With the ball skidding on a slick surface, she managed to get a hand to the ball but couldn’t keep it out of the net. Eastleigh led 1 – 0.
Farnham switched to 3 at the back to try to get the equaliser, pushing Cook into midfield. In the dying minute Charlie Powell was pulled back 25 yards out for a free kick to Farnham. With players packing the box, a well delivered ball looked like it could drop to Farnham, but Eastleigh just managed to scramble the ball away for the final whistle.
A good, competitive game that turned on missed chances. Farnham can take heart from a strong performance with a much-changed side.
Final score: Farnham Town Ladies 0 – 1 Eastleigh.

14 Oct 2007 FTFC Ladies 5 - 0 Hayling United (League)
Farnham See Off Hayling United
Not a vintage performance, but Farnham Town Ladies managed to put 5 goals past visiting Hayling United Ladies for no reply on Sunday 14th October, to go 2nd in the early season table.
After the disappointment of the last game, FTFC were looking to find some of their missing form, and with nearly the full squad available a home game against Hayling United was the perfect opportunity.
With Megan Powell returning from injury slotting in at left back and Debbie Wood returning to the midfield, FTFC looked more balanced and confident of the formation than of late. Early pressure from Farnham set the script for most of the match, with Hayling defending deep and looking to counter.
A late challenge on Charlie Powell on the edge of the area saw Lora Hodgkinson knock a clever free kick short to Debbie Wood, whose shot was only just scrambled away by the Hayling defence.
Emily Marchant was next to test the Hayling keeper, who held well, and a fierce shot from Katie Cook, playing up front for the first time, blazed just over the bar. The pressure was all one way, however, and it was only going to be a matter of time before the creaking Hayling defence gave way. Repeated crosses from the left had already caused problems in the box, and on 18 minutes a beautifully curled ball was handled by a Hayling defender. The referee had no hesitation pointing to the spot, and Emily Marchant stepped up to confidently stroke the ball into the corner of the net for 1 – 0.
Having taken the lead, FTFC were slightly guilty of switching off, and Hayling very nearly caught Farnham asleep at the re-start. With too much time and space, the FTFC defence put themselves into trouble by failing to clear a simple ball which Hayling stole and knocked forward. Lucie Spooner in the FTFC goal had to be sharp off her line to clear the ball up field and avert the danger.
A great overlapping run down the left run from Megan Powell restored the balance of the game, with Hayling just clearing the final ball into the box. The Hayling keeper, giving a tremendous performance, was soon called into action again, pushing another Marchant shot around the post after she was played in by Charlie Powell. Mel Miles was next up, her strong run from deep carrying her into the box, only to see her thunderous shot turned over the bar by the inspired keeper. Debbie Wood put the ball in the net from the resulting corner, only to see her strike denied by the linesman’s flag.
The Hayling keeper continued to frustrate Farnham, keeping out successive shots from Charlie Powell, Katie Cook, Debbie Wood and Mel Miles. In truth, at times she seemed all that stood between Hayling and a heavy defeat.
Heading toward half time, and having failed to sufficiently capitalise on their dominance, FTFC were starting to show some frustration. Too many long balls were being cleared by a regrouping Hayling defence, and no one seemed to be really taking hold of the game.
Captain Debbie Wood provided the inspiration needed, driving through from midfield, carrying the ball 30 yards before being crudely taken down just outside the area. Lora Hodgkinson again fired in a great free-kick, which the Hayling keeper could only palm away for Emily Marchant to follow up and make the score 2 – 0 to Farnham on 42 minutes.
A half time team talk saw FTFC come out for the second period with instructions to put their passing game together, and test Hayling more down the flanks. The change worked well, with FTFC enjoying almost total territorial dominance, but frustratingly still struggling to find a way past the Hayling keeper. Any forays Hayling made up field were generally dealt with well by the FTFC defence, and although they had some good moments Lucie Spooner in goal was never seriously tested.
With Megan Powell tiring in her first game back, Emma Legg moved to right back and Gemma McKeown, on at right wing, put in a great performance, regularly beating her player and crossing with purpose. With Hayling again under serious pressure, a series of FTFC corners saw Lora Hodgkinson put a well flighted ball into the box for Debbie Wood to volley a well deserved goal for a 3 – 0 lead on 74 minutes.
Hayling visibly wilted, and two minutes later a rampant Emily Marchant was unceremoniously upended from behind when through one-on-one with the keeper. Again the referee pointed immediately to the spot, and in truth it could have been much worse for the Hayling defender, who, with no covering player, must have been surprised not to be shown a red card. Marchant dusted herself down and took revenge, nonchalantly knocking the ball into the net for her 3rd hat-trick of the season and 4 – 0 to Farnham.
The final goal was probably the pick of the bunch. Steff Millington, on for Katie Cook who’d given a lung bursting performance up front, picked up a short pass on the edge of the box. Her instant control and turn took two covering Hayling players out of the picture, and she struck a perfect curling shot into the top corner of the goal, beating the keeper comfortably for 5 – 0 on 80 minutes.
Farnham maintained the pressure for the last 10 minutes, and the final score was Farnham Town Ladies 5 – 0 Hayling United.
Farnham Town meet division leaders Eastleigh at the Memorial Hall Ground on Sunday 28th October, in the Hampshire Invitation Cup.

07 Oct 2007 Gosport Borough 4 - 3 FTFC Ladies (League)
Farnham Fail to Capitalise on Lead
Farnham Town Ladies took the lead twice in their game against Gosport Borough on Sunday 7th October, but lost 4 – 3.
A disappointing result for a restructured Farnham, who created the majority of the chances, but in the end the failure to seriously test the Gosport ‘keeper always left the door open.
With a number of injuries and absences forcing a new-look defence line up, Farnham were looking to try and take the game to the opposition. An early free kick saw Lora Hodgkinson strike the bar, the rebound just scrambled clear. Then, with Gosport on the back foot, a well timed run saw a Charlie Powell header going just wide.
The tactic paid dividends shortly after, when a battle in the midfield was won by Farnham on the 13th minute, with Gemma McKeown putting in a pinpoint cross for Emily Marchant, who turned inside and put the ball in the net for a 1 – 0 lead.
Both ‘keepers were called into action in the following period, with Lucie Spooner making a couple of comfortable saves. On 24 minutes Steff Dalton out muscled the Gosport forward to a high ball just outside the Farnham box, knocking the ball down to McKeown. McKeown hit a perfect first time ball with the outside of her boot, splitting the Gosport defence and sending Marchant racing through on goal to tuck away her second of the game.
At 2 – 0, Farnham had a firm grip on the game and were playing some neat football. Working the spaces well, they created half-chances for Charlie Powell, Emily Marchant and Katie Cook, but the Gosport ‘keeper fielded everything. When another Lora Hodgkinson free kick went just over the bar, the signs were there that Farnham could regret not taking their opportunities.
The breakthrough for Gosport came in the 38th minute, when a good break down the left saw a fiercely crossed ball rear up in the box, striking a Farnham hand on the way. The referee was quick to point to the spot, and a perfectly struck free-kick beat Spooner to make it 2-1.
Farnham were rocked, and less than 2 minutes later the scores were levelled, a quick break seeing Gosport confidently knock in their 2nd for 2 – 2 just before the break.
The second half saw Farnham trying to reassert their authority, and Emily Marchant confidently chipped the advancing ‘keeper from 25 yards with the goal of the season so far, to put them back in the driving seat at 3 – 2.
Again, though, Farnham failed to press the advantage, and Gosport came back the stronger, fighting for every ball, with Farnham struggling to effectively clear their lines. On 69 minutes they got their reward. A blatant push on Helen Slater at centre half was missed by the referee, and the offending player added insult to injury, racing through onto the loose ball and calmly finishing to equalise at 3 – 3.
Gosport were now hungry for the win, having come from behind twice, and mounted continual attacks. On 77 minutes they managed to get round the Farnham defence and took the lead 4 – 3.
Going behind had the effect of galvanising Farnham, who created a number of half-decent chances in the final 10 minutes. A succession of corners kept Gosport pinned back, and Steff Dalton could have grabbed a point on 90 minutes when her firm headed went just wide. Too little too late, however, and Farnham were edged out of a game they could, and possibly should, have won.
Final result Gosport Borough 4 – 3 Farnham Town Ladies.

30 Sep 2007 FTFC Ladies 4 - 2 Gosport
Farnham Move Up The Table.
Farnham Town Ladies have moved into 2nd place after beating Gosport 4 – 2 on Sunday 30th September.
Make no mistake, this was a hard-fought, high-paced game between two well drilled footballing sides. A rain-softened Memorial Hall pitch provided a great surface for both teams to put on a show for the spectators, who were treated to a game full of passion and commitment.
Farnham now have a good mix of youth and experience, and it certainly helped in this encounter against a young, fast Gosport side that play a great brand of counter-attacking football based on pace down the wings and movement off the last man.
Starting with the 3-5-2 formation that worked so well in the last game, Farnham again seized the initiative early on. Winning the ball in midfield, Mel Miles took time to steady herself and place a shot across the Gosport ‘keeper from 18 yards, finding the far corner for 1 – 0 on 4 minutes.
Gosport responded strongly, though, immediately testing the Farnham defence a number of times. Then on 8 minutes a quick break down the right saw the Gosport winger with space to finish with a well placed chip from distance over Farnham ‘keeper Lucie Spooner to level the scores at 1 – 1.
Farnham are a resilient bunch, though, and they went back on the offensive, with Charlie Powell, Roxy Coles and Emily Marchant bringing saves from the ‘keeper. Still dangerous on the break, Lucie Spooner stood up well to force a Gosport shot wide, and Steff Dalton, who gave another immense performance, just managed to cut out a strong run through the mid-field, her last ditch tackle conceding a corner which was cleared up field.
In truth the game was fairly evenly balanced, with both sides creating chances. Farnham’s new look back line had to be alert, playing the offside very effectively – stepping up smartly on a number of occasions to snuff out danger. This is a high-risk strategy against a quick side, though, and after a couple of warnings Gosport eventually sprung the trap, racing through on goal to steer the ball home and take a 2 – 1 lead on 19 minutes.
Farnham had to respond, and Debbie Wood dropped back to help provide some bite in the defence. The change to 4-4-2 also freed up space in the middle of the park, which Farnham put to good use, moving the ball around well and probing for an opening. A well worked move saw another Roxy Coles cheeky back heel goal ruled out for offside, but at least the pressure on the visitor’s defence was increasing. Charlie Powell and Katie Cook, again working well together in midfield, both had chances to level the game, but a combination of good goalkeeping and wayward finishing kept Gosport in front.
As so often, Emily Marchant supplied the end product Farnham were searching for. Katie Cook was starting to get a firm grip of the midfield, and on 31 minutes she cut out a Gosport attack, swiftly transferring the ball to Emma Legg, whose pinpoint pass put Marchant through one-on-one with the keeper to score her 1st of the game with a cool finish, levelling the score at 2 – 2.
Farnham pretty much held possession for the remainder of the half, but despite pinning Gosport back couldn’t work another goal. A final Gosport attack in the 1st half found the net but was just off-side.
Farnham came out much the stronger in the 2nd half, with prolonged periods of constructive possession and Powell and Legg repeatedly working space down the flanks, delivering some searching crosses that Gosport did well to cope with. In the end it was only going to be a matter of time, but it wasn’t until the 59th minute that Mel Miles found Emma Legg, who again slid the ball in the box for Emily Marchant to run onto and stroke past the keeper for a 3 – 2 lead.
Gosport rallied for a period, with a couple of dangerous attacks and a real battle in the mid-field, before their fitness started to fade. Spotting the chance, Farnham bought on the fresh legs of Steff Millington, Gemma McKeown and Sian Boniface and finally started to boss the game. At this stage there was only likely to be one winner, and McKeown, Boniface and Cook soon teamed up to find Charlie Powell just inside the penalty box. Turning quickly inside the full back, Powell slammed in her first of the season for a 4 – 2 lead on 83 minutes.
After this Farnham were content to see the game out, and in truth Gosport failed to find the energy for any further serious threats as the game finished 4 – 2 to Farnham.
This was a great game for the spectators to watch, with some good football played between two talented sides that eventually fought each other to a standstill.

23 Sep 2007 FTFC Ladies 6 - 0 Widbrook United
Farnham Find Form At Home.
Farnham Town Ladies return to winning ways with a 6 - 0 home win over Widbrook Ladies.
A lot of hard work has gone into preparing the excellent Memorial Hall pitch for the new season, and in their first home match of the campaign Farnham took full advantage of a great football surface.
A number of early-season injuries have already affected the squad, and Farnham were forced to field a team without several regular players, including two of last season’s outstanding defenders and both goalkeepers. Operating on the attack as the best form of defence principle, Farnham took to the field with an aggressive 3-5-2 formation, looking for goals. The line up paid immediate dividends; from the kick off a strong run by Charlie Powell saw the ball whipped into the box for the fast arriving Emily Marchant to turn over the line for a 1 – 0 lead in the first minute. Powell was impressive throughout the match and tormented the Widbrook defence for the entire game.
Despite the early lead Farnham still looked nervous and hurried, and failed to capitalise on their possession. Powell hit a fierce drive into the side netting, and Mel Miles was denied twice by the Widbrook keeper, but despite that frustration was starting to creep into the game. With simple passes going astray and poor movement off the ball, Farnham were in danger of handing the initiative to the opposition.
Sensing the unease, Widbrook began to feel more confident and with their first real attack forced stand-in ‘keeper Debbie Wood into a fine save. Minutes later Widbrook fired just wide from a free kick on the edge of the box, and Helen Slater then had to clear a corner off the line.
Farnham finally responded, and good work in the midfield saw a free kick awarded for a blatant push. Lora Hodgkinson, so often the dead ball specialist, stepped up to bend the ball home Beckham-like from 30 yards to take a 2 – 0 on 32 minutes, which Farnham held into the break.
Coming out for the second half, Farnham looked a different proposition. With much improved movement and a real sense of purpose, Farnham pinned Widbrook back immediately. Good movement down the right and a cleverly worked ball into the near post saw Roxy Coles score with the cheekiest of back heels on 48 minutes, keeping up her scoring record to make it 3 – 0 Farnham.
Powell followed this up with a great run through the Widbrook defence, but once again could only find the side netting. Then on 51 minutes, a square ball found Mel Miles on the edge of the box, and her beautifully curled shot, hit with pace, went beyond the dive of the ‘keeper. 4 – 0 Farnham.
Emily Marchant, last season’s top scorer, then clicked back into her regular scoring groove. Showing great composure in the box, Marchant controlled a fast moving ball, took a glance at the ‘keeper and steered the ball into the corner for her second goal and 5 – 0.
Widbrook made a couple of substitutions, and had a brief spell of attack. However, the impressive new-look Farnham defence dealt with everything comfortably, and Steff Dalton in particular gave a man-of-the-match performance - ferocious in the tackle and strong in the air, quick to close down and using the ball well in possession to set-up repeated counter attacks.
Sian Boniface came on for Coles on 60 minutes, and worked well with Charlie Powell, Emily Marchant and Katie Cook, with Farnham playing some nice passing football, and taking several shots.
On 82 minutes an inspired through ball from the impressive Cook in midfield saw Marchant sprint past the tiring Widbrook defence to calmly slot into the far corner for her hat-trick, and a convincing 6 – 0 win for FTFC Ladies.
Final Result: Farnham Town Ladies 6 – 0 Widbrook Ladies

16 Sep 2007 Eastleigh 4 - 2 FTFC Ladies (League)
The 2007 season started poorly for Farnham Town Ladies FC, losing away to Eastleigh.
First half goals from Roxy Coles and Mel Miles weren't enough for FTFC, as Eastleigh scored 4 in reply to run out winners. The game was closer than the scoreline suggests, and had FTFC taken some of the chances they created the result could easily have gone the other way. However, with both FTFC 'keepers unavailable through injury, a valiant effort from Ami Cheesman in the net wasn't quite enough to keep Eastleigh at bay.
At times FTFC played some neat football, with good approach work, but they need to rediscover their clinical touch in front of goal. However, this is the first game of the season and it will take time for a revamped squad to gel.

Pre-Season 2007/2008
Latest Result: Farnham Town Ladies 5 - 2 Moneyfields Ladies (02Sep Pre-season Friendly). FTFC Ladies continued their good pre-season form with a relatively comfortable win in a fast paced, and at times physical, encounter with Moneyfields. Playing in Hampshire Div III this season, Moneyfields are a well drilled, commited side who are comfortable with the ball. However, FTFC gave them little chance to settle into a rhythm, with Charlie Powell, ably supported by Megan Powell, again marauding down the left, getting in behind the defence and creating a number of clear chances. Some incisive passing from Debbie Woods and Katie Cook also helped open up Moneyfields, creating space for the FTFC forward line to exploit.
First half goals from Charlie and Roxy Coles, again playing well as the lone striker, were answered with a goal on the break by Moneyfields, to give a FTFC a 2 - 1 lead at half time.
The second half saw two of last seasons ever-presents get their first run out after lay offs through injury, with Lora Hodgkinson coming on at left back and Emma Legg slotting back into midfield.
It didn't take long for Farnham to extend their lead through Katie Cook, firing home from 18 yards after more good work from the wings. It was followed by her 2nd a few minutes later, after a deep cross into the box saw the keeper make a good save from Katie's header. Reacting first to the loose ball, she drilled home from a narrow angle to put FTFC comfortably in control, 4 - 1.
A perfectly struck free kick from Moneyfields, after Helen Slater was harshly adjudged to have foulde 20 yards out, saw the scores move to 4 - 2, but Sian put the result beyond doubt with a calm right-footed finish from 6 yards. Another good workout, and real signs that the team is gelling just in time for the season.
Previous Result Abbey Rangers Ladies 4 - 6 Farnham Town Ladies FC (27Aug Pre-season Friendly). A good warm up against determined opposition saw FTFC Ladies win their 2nd pre-season game. Abbey play in the South East Counties (East) Div I, and ensured that FTFC Ladies had to work hard for their win. A good start saw FTFC go 2 goals up, with great work from Roxy Coles and Charlie Powell undoing the Abbey defence at will. A water break proved the turning point, though, with FTFC losing their way and Abbey changing formation to ask far more questions of the FTFC defence, scoring 4 for no reply to lead 4 - 2 at half time.
A switch to 3 at the back for the second half saw FTFC regain the initiative immediately, scoring almost from the restart. By effectively snuffing out the threat from the midfield and pinning Abbey back defending their 18-yard box, it was only a matter of time before FTFC broke them down again, and Charlie and Roxy duly obliged with well taken goals.
Some great work around the pitch deserves a mention - the back 3 of Helen, Megan and Sian kept things tight, with Claire Hull providing a safe pair of hands in goal. Charlie, with 5 goals, gave the Abbey defence a torrid time down the left, while Gemma provided great service down the right and was unlucky not to score herself. New signing Katie gave a powerful performance at the heart of the midfield, battling for every ball and acting as the launch pad for many attacks. Roxy gave the classic lone striker performance - holding the ball up when required, keeping the Abbey defence honest and setting up 3 goals, as well as scoring.
Lisa 'One Half' Cooper would have been there. But she's still injured. Shocking...!
Previous Result: Basingstoke Ladies Res 2 - 4 Farnham Town Ladies FC (04Aug Pre-season Friendly). Goals from debutant Katie Cook and Mel Miles helped FTFC Ladies to a win in their first pre-season friendly. A good workout on a blisteringly hot day - well done!

29 Apr 2007 Wey Valley Ladies 0 - 4 FTFC Ladies (League)
Farnham Town end season on a win and promotion
Farnham went to Wey Valley for their final game of the season on Sunday 29th April, and came away with a 4 – 0 win and promotion to the 2nd Division.
The previous games between these two local rivals have been close, and for the first half an hour this one was going the same way. Playing 3 - 5 - 2 on what is a small pitch led to a very congested midfield, and neither team were able to really assert themselves. Valley had the best of the opening exchanges, trying to play the ball in behind the Farnham defence for their pacey wingers and forward to run on to, but Lucie Spooner in goal was alert enough to clear any danger.
A lethargic Farnham then put together their first real move, Emily Marchant releasing Roxy Cole to fire a shot just wide. But Farnham were still playing within themselves, and although Mel Miles and Lora Hodgkinson both went close, Valley very nearly punished them for the lack of a cutting edge. On the break a fiercely struck shot looked to be a certain goal until Lucie Spooner pulled off a dramatic diving save, pushing the ball out for a corner.
Both teams tried building attacks, but the game had a real end of season affair feel to it, and this, combined with the heat and a general lack of shape, meant neither keeper was seriously tested.
The break through for Farnham finally came in the 36th minute. A throw in from Helen Slater was cleverly flicked on by Emily Marchant to a waiting Roxy Cole in the box and she calmly put the ball in the net for Farnham to take a 1 – 0 lead.
A half time rocket from the manager and a change to 4 – 4 – 2 to release space in the middle of the park saw Farnham start the second period with far more shape and determination. Debbie Wood seized the initiative in the midfield, making herself available and playing some excellent, searching balls in behind the Valley defence. One incisive pass saw Emily Marchant again causing havoc in the Valley box, working her way into space and putting the ball across the front of the goal, but no Farnham player was able to meet it. Charlie Powell, linking well with Woods, also started to feature prominently, regularly cutting in from the wing and having a shot scrambled off the line and a half volley saved by the keeper.
At 1 – 0, Wey Valley were still in it, though, and they used their game plan to good effect, regularly breaking quickly on the counter attack, but foundering on a Farnham defence that has the meanest record in the league. All good sides are built on a solid defensive unit, and Farnham’s has been exceptional this season, time and again providing the launch pad for victory.
On 77 minutes Farnham finally made their pressure count. A well worked ball from Mel Miles put Charlie Powell through behind the Valley back-line, and she confidently put the ball round the keeper and into the net for a 2 – 0 lead. Valley were rocked back, and they fell further behind 3 minutes later when Emily Marchant capped a good second half display with a fine finish for 3 – 0, working space for herself in the box before shooting firmly across the keeper.
With a couple of minutes to go, Charlie Powell put the game out of Valleys reach. The ball was flicked into the box, and Powell gave the keeper no chance, placing her header into the top corner for a deserved 2nd and Farnham’s 4th.
Farnham played some good possession and passing football in the second half, showing the form that has lead to finish in the top 2 and promotion to Hampshire County Women’s League Division 2 next season. Their final position is dependent on Southampton Saints performance in their final game in a couple of weeks.

22 Apr 2007 FTFC Ladies 12 - 0 Team Solent (League)
Farnham Town put 12 past Team Solent
Farnham hosted Team Solent in their penultimate game of the season on Sunday 22nd April, and put 12 goals past the visitors to win 12 – 0.
Farnham started strongly from the whistle, determined to put the defeat of the previous week behind them, when Charlie Powell headed on a ball into the box, for Mel Miles to start the scoring on 7 minutes.
Farnham dominated the mid-field and the attacking play, with shots from Emily merchant, Gemma McKeown, Claire Katoroz and Debbie Wood, before Farnham were awarded a penalty for a hand ball which Emily Marchant stroked ionto the net for a 2 – 0 lead on 19 mins. Emily followed this with her 2nd and 3rd goals within 10 minutes.
Team Solent produced a brief attack, with a shot coming off the post, which Farnham cleared up field, with Debbie Wood putting Emily Marchant through for her 4th and a 5 – 0 lead to Farnham with 15 minutes of the half left to play.
Megan Powell and Charlie Powell played some good overlapping football down the wing, and Mel Miles had a shot rebound off the cross bar, which Emily Marchant put over the goal.
Farnham kept Team Solent defending the penalty box, a corner taken by Charlie Powell finding Debbie Wood to head in the back of the net and Emily Marchant passing a ball off to Charlie Powell for her to slot it onto the bottom corner.
Gemma McKoewn ended the half with a strong cross in to Debbie Wood, for her 2nd and Farnham to lead 8 – 0 at half time.
Three minutes into the 2nd half Farnham were awardwd another penalty for a hand-ball, which substitute Roxy Cole put past the keeper for 9 – 0. A few minutes later a shot from Woods, outside the penalty box, found the net for her hatrick.
Farnham continued to attack relentlessly, with Team Solent barely getting the ball into their half. On one of many corners the Team Solent centre back mis-judged her header and put the ball in the net for Farnham. Megan Powell finished the game with a final shot from Farnham on 45 minutes, also finding the net and giving Farnham a 12 – 0 win.
This was Farnham’s best league win of the season, with some nice flowing football and an excellent team performance. Farnham play Wey Valley away on Sunday 29th April, but will have to wait another 2 weeks for the league to finish before they know if they will finish 1st or 2nd.

15 Apr 2007 FTFC Ladies 2 - 3 Rushmoor Saints(League)
Farnham fail to convert chances
After their mid-week exertions against a touring Swedish side, a lethargic display in the blistering heat from Farnham Town Ladies saw them lose 3 – 2 to local rivals Rushmoor Saints.
With the title in the balance Farnham needed a win to stay top, but they lost out to a Rushmoor team whose game plan was based around a packed defence and a desire to win every ball.
Farnham started relatively strongly – good approach play saw Mel Miles scuff a shot at the Rushmoor keeper after only a couple of minutes when a goal seemed inevitable. A Farnham corner was then flicked across the face of the goal by Charlie Powell but couldn’t find a Farnham head.
Emma Legg, playing on the wing drove in a shot which the Rushmoor keeper again held. Rushmoor then turned on the attack, with a shot hitting the up-right and being put over on the follow-up.
Emily Marchant made a great run down the line, crossing to Claire Katoroz, whose shot was scrambled off the line by a 10 man Rushmoor defence. Another shot by Mel Miles was picked up by the keeper, before Debbie Wood’s shot was blocked and fell for Mel for her to put the ball in the back on the net on 20mins.
Farnham continued to pile on the pressure, using both wings and taking numerous shots at the goal. Failure to convert their chances cost Farnham in the 36th minute when Rushmoor, on the break, got behind the Farnham defence and round the keeper to make it 1 – 1.
Farnham responded well, with captain, Debbie Wood, almost immediately putting Farnham back in front, turning on the edge of the penalty box and slamming the ball in to the net for a 2 – 1 lead at half time.
Rushmoor made a couple of substitutions and came out fighting in the second half. A long ball out from their keeper found their centre forward, in what the Farnham defence thought was an off-side position, and the ball was put in the net for 2 – 2.
Emily Marchant, Charlie Powell and Debbie Wood all put shots wide, while Farnham keeper Lucie Spooner had to make a diving save to stop Rushmoor going ahead. Marchant had another effort scrambled off the line by a Rushmoor defender after she had got round the keeper.
Rushmoor played another long ball behind the Farnham defence, which 2 Rushmoor players took forward, from what again appeared to be off-side positions flagged by the linesman, but over-ruled by the referee, to score the winner on 43 minutes.
Marchant got past the keeper again in the last minute, but couldn’t get the ball past the Rushmoor defence and over the line.
In reality, despite a poor overall display, Farnham had more than enough chances to have made the game safe, and should have done so. But credit to Rushmoor, they were prepared to work hard and take their chances, and in the end it was enough to take the points as well.
The final score was 3 – 2 to Rushmoor, in a disappointing display by Farnham. This leaves Farnham back in 2nd place, after Southampton beat Wey Valley 5 – 2.
Farnham play Team Solent at 2pm at the Memorial Hall Ground on Sunday 22nd April, in their last home fixture of the season.
Players: Debbie Wood (Capt), Lucie Spooner, Ami Cheesman, Helen Slater, Lora Hodgkinson , Emily Marchant (1), Melissa Miles (1), Megan Powell, Emma Legg, Charlie Powell, Calire Katoroz Subs: Nikki Kelly, Gemma McKeown.

01 Apr 2007 Southampton Saints Reserves 2 - 3 FTFC Ladies (League)
Some games define a season and when we look back, whatever happens, this top of the table clash could well be the one. Going into the match, Farnham knew that nothing less than a win would keep alive their hopes of clinching the title. With Southampton sitting top, having shaded the points from the previous two meetings between the sides with a narrow victory at home in the first, and hanging on for a goalless draw in the second at The Memorial Ground, Farnham needed to win the final match down at the Saints pitch to pull level on points and give themselves a chance.
The two sides are well matched, both full of skilful, committed players who are prepared to put in the hard work as well as play neat, attacking football. Saints might be a young team, but they are more than prepared to mix it up if required, and the game saw a classic battle between youth and experience, with neither side backing down.
In the absence of Megan Powell, out through injury, the re-jigged Farnham defence saw Emma Legg slot in at right back. A bright start from Saints saw them test the new line up early on, with their pacy wingers attacking down both sides and good movement from the centre forwards through the middle keeping the pressure on. A well delivered corner could have caused problems, but Farnham held firm and gradually played themselves into the match, taking control of the midfield and pushing Saints back into their own half. With Charlie Powell seeing a lot of the ball on the left, and constantly testing the Saints full back, the game soon developed a pattern. The well-drilled Saints side sat deep, defending in numbers in their own third and soaking up pressure, looking to break with pace when they got possession. The tactic nearly paid dividends in the 15th minute when a Farnham attack broke down just outside the box and Saints counter attacked quickly, a ball over the top to their forward seeing goalkeeper Lucie Spooner making a fine reflex save when exposed one on one.
Farnham responded well, and with Emily Marchant and Gemma McKeown keeping pressure on the Saints defence the breakthrough came in the 27th minute. The ball broke free to Nikki Kelly in the box, and she evaded a couple of tackles to squeeze a shot away across goal that was deflected in by the Saints centre back. The Dubious Goals committee is still out on that one, but it gave Farnham a 1 -0 lead.
With Saints needing at least a draw to maintain their lead in the table, they started playing more adventurous football, attacking in numbers and winning a couple of free kicks just outside the Farnham box. The first was placed well over, but the second from 22 yards was struck perfectly, curling over the wall into the far corner for a 1 – 1 score line with 32 minutes on the clock.
Farnham were rocked, and before they could recover a bouyant Saints took the lead. A through ball from midfield saw them break the offside trap, and their forward sprinted through to take the ball around the keeper and finish well from a narrow angle on 35 minutes. This could have been the cue for Farnham heads to drop, but driven on by captain Debbie Woods in midfield they responded well, with Emily Marchant bringing a great save from the Saints keeper to see them into half time with a 2 – 1 lead.
Farnham rang the changes during the break, bringing Claire Katoroz on up-front to replace Nikki Kelly to try and put more pressure on the Saints back line. But it was Farnham who felt the initial heat, Lucie Spooner having to be quick off the line to clear a couple of half chances for Saints before Farnham finally woke up. Breaking quickly up the other end, a battling Emily Marchant forced a corner for Farnham in the 53rd minute. Lora Hodgkinson whipped in the perfect ball for Charlie Powell to finish with a stunning scissor kick from 10 yards out, slamming the ball home before the Saints defence could react. The ensuing celebration ranks right up there with the best we’ve seen, but at 2 – 2 Farnham still needed another goal.
What followed is probably the finest collective performance FTFC Ladies have given this season, chasing every lost cause, winning every individual and team battle and gradually wearing Saints down, mounting attack after attack. Claire Katoroz, Mel Miles and Debbie Woods were demanding and seeing plenty of the ball and started using Marchant’s pace, constantly dropping the ball in behind the Saints’ back line for her to run onto, creating a series of chances. A headed effort over the advancing keeper was cleared off the line, and one of the finest runs we’ve seen saw Marchant sprint past the Saints’ right back and evade a strong challenge in the box, only to poke the ball just wide from a tight angle.
With 9 minutes to go Farnham were finally rewarded for keeping their belief and forcing the issue. Another fine ball over the top put Marchant clear, and she produced a finish worthy of the excellent season she’s having, lobbing the ball over the keeper from 20 yards out to take Farnham into a deserved 3 – 2 lead.
For such a young side, though, Saints are resilient and they fought back hard, throwing everything they could forward in the search for an equaliser. Farnham held firm, switching to a fluid 4-5-1/5-4-1 for the last few minutes. With Gemma McKeown dropping deep when needed to double up with Ami Cheesman at right back and stifle progress down that side, and the centre back pairing of Lora Hodgkinson and Helen Slater breaking up anything through the middle, Farnham were generally in control. They even managed to create a couple of half chances of their own before the final whistle, with Charlie Powell nearly putting the game beyond doubt with another strong run.
A Saints’ corner in the final minute caused some anxiety among the vocal travelling support, but the ball was well cleared up field as the referee blew for time, and a hard-fought but deserved Farnham victory.
A pulsating, bruising, end-to-end match that will be remembered for a long time showed why these two teams are at the top, and gives the title run in a new twist – with three games to go this is one season that may well go down to goal difference…

Farnham Town Ladies Hit Top Spot (short report filed)
Farnham Town Ladies beat Widbrook United 3 - 0 to move into first place in the league.
Another home game and another win for Farnham, who have hit form at the right time. Mixed weather meant another very heavy pitch, and another physical battle. However, Farnham are playing confident, possession football and they made the conditions work for them, moving the ball around well and making Widbrook chase the game.
It took 25 minutes for the break through to come - a flighted free kick from Lora Hodgkinson finding Charlie Powell in the box to stroke in the opener. Farnham pressed their advantage, and would have comfortably extended their lead but for some wayward finishing, striking the bar and upright on a number of occasions, and seeing the Widbrook keeper make a series of saves.
The second half continued in the same vein as the first, with Farnham enjoying the majority of the game but failing to capitalise on some excellent approach work. With Widbrook looking dangerous at times on the break, Farnham needed to score a second to settle the game. Emily Marchant obliged, running onto a through ball and cooly finishing for 2 - 0.
With minutes remaining, Lora Hodgkinson whipped in a corner that Charlie Powell converted from close range for her second of the game and a final score of 3 - 0.

Farnham Town Ladies Extend Winning Streak (short report filed)
Farnham Town Ladies beat Team Solent with a 6 - 1 win at home on Sunday, 18th February.
A heavy, muddy pitch caused both teams problems, and the game soon became a physical midfield battle, with Farnham eventually gaining the upper hand.
Nikki Kelly opened the scoring for Farnham with a firm header, and Emily Marchant contributed from the penalty spot just before half time after Charlie Powell was brought down in the box.
The second half saw Farnham press home their advantage, with Charlie Powell scoring her hat trick in a man of the match performance.
With Claire Katoroz opening her account for Farnham for a 6 - 0 lead, Team Solent scored a late consolation goal for a final score of 6 - 1.

11 Feb 2007 FTFC Ladies 9 - 1 Rushmoor Saints Ladies (League)
Farnham Town Ladies Maintain Winning Form
Farnham Town Ladies beat local rivals, Rushmoor Saints with a 9 - 1 win at home on Sunday 11th February.
Second met third on a heavy pitch, and Farnham showed their intention to retain their dominant position with a very comfortable win over an under strength Rushmoor.
Farnham have been scoring freely in recent matches, on the back of some good team performances, and this game was no exception. Starting quickly, Farnham had Rushmoor pinned back and in the 3rd minute another deep cross from in-form Charlie Powell found Emily Marchant free in the box, wrong footing the keeper and guiding home a good finish with the outside of her boot.
Rushmoor responded for a brief spell, packing the midfield and causing a few problems for the Farnham back line. However, a quick break up field saw captain Debbie Woods put Nikki Kelly through to score on 10 minutes, 2 – 0 to Farnham. A few minutes later a weak goal kick from the Rushmoor keeper was collected by Mel Miles, who slid the ball through for Charlie Powell to net her first goal of the game and a 3 – 0 lead.
Playing with confidence, Farnham soon had their fourth, Charlie Powell collecting the ball from a throw, evading 3 defenders and scoring her second. Not to be outdone, Nikki Kelly grabbed her second of the game as well, charging down the Rushmoor keeper’s clearance and tapping the ball into an empty net for 5 – 0.
Almost inevitably, Rushmoor heads dropped and straight from the kick off Mel Miles stole the ball, releasing Emily Marchant to advance from the half way line and casually steer the ball around the keeper for 6 – 0. Marchant is in a rich vein of form, and she sealed her hat trick just before half time, scoring from the penalty spot after she’d been brought down in the box, giving Farnham a 7 – 0 lead at the break. Rushmoor looked a well beaten team, and were lucky not to have had a defender sent off for the cynical challenge from behind on Marchant that led to the penalty.
Farnham made several changes at half time, and the fresh legs kept Rushmoor pinned back. To their credit, they kept battling, and created a few good chances of their own. Playing as a lone striker, the young Rushmoor forward was involved in most of their most promising moves, but was essentially well shackled by Farnham. On one of the few occasions that Farnham failed to clear the ball, a well struck shot from the edge of the area beat the Farnham keeper, at least giving them some reward for their endeavours, and a 7 – 1 score line.
Although the goal galvanised them, and they drew a few saves from Lucie Spooner in goal, Rushmoor were soon punished again, Roxy Cole finding Charlie Powell in the box who completed her hat trick with a good turn and finish. Powell wasn’t satisfied though; an audacious chip from 20 yards saw the keeper beaten for her fourth of the match, and a final result of 9 – 1.
Farnham Town meet Team Solent on 18th February, and Widbrook United on the 25th February, both games are to be played at the Farnham Memorial Ground.

05 Feb 2007 Mudeford Phoenix 0 - 10 FTFC Ladies (League)
Farnham Town Ladies Make New Forest Trip Worth While
Farnham Town Ladies beat Mudeford Phoenix for the second time in 2 weeks, with a 10 - 0 win away from home on Sunday 4th February.
Farnham’s recent games have seen them trying to produce score lines that reflect their possession and dominance, and on a gloriously sunny but cold afternoon a very attacking Farnham line up went looking for goals. Mudeford were on the back foot almost immediately, with a couple of quickly won corners causing their defence problems. Then in the third minute Charlie Powell scorched past the covering defender and whipped a fine ball in from the left, picking out Nikki Kelly in the box to head Farnham into a 1 – 0 lead.
Megan Powell followed this with another run down the left, crossing the ball for Emily Marchant to take on the keeper and stroke the ball home for 2 – 0 on 10 minutes.
Farnham momentarily lost concentration, Helen Slater racing back to clear up a threaded through ball from Mudeford. Slater gave an impressive man of the match performance at the heart of a rejigged 3 man defence, sweeping up anything loose coming forward and helping launch countless attacks with some intelligent play.
With five across the middle and Slater helping to build from the back, Farnham dominated possession, keeping Mudeford penned in their own half. Good link up work from Emma Legg, Mel Miles and Debbie Woods created another opening for Emily Marchant, who coolly steered the ball around the Mudeford keeper for her second, giving Farnham a 3 – 0 lead on 20 minutes. A shell shocked Mudeford failed to regroup and they fell even further behind almost immediately when a searching ball from Debbie Woods put Nikki Kelly clear for her 2nd goal, giving Farnham a 4 – 0 lead on 23 minutes.
Mudeford then showed some fighting spirit, enjoying a brief spell of pressure and winning a couple of corners before Charlie Powell broke clear down the left wing, passing to Megan Powell on the overlapping run. Powell cut inside the box and hammered the ball in at the near post for 5 – 0.
Mudeford’s keeper was their busiest player on the pitch, almost single handedly denying Farnham further goals before half time.
Despite Megan Powell limping off injured almost immediately, Farnham started the second half strongly, with substitute Roxy Cole causing problems for Mudeford, but twice just unable to find the net. Then on 68 minutes the Mudeford centre-back tried to clear a cross under pressure, finding her own net for Farnham to lead 6 – 0. Farnham’s substitute keeper Claire Hull then had to deal with a couple of loose balls before the action switched back to the Mudeford goal. Another desperate attempt at a clearance saw a Mudeford defender hit their own cross bar, and Emily Marchant followed it up to get her hat-trick and make the score 7 – 0.
With Mudeford now firmly under siege in their own third, a long free kick from Lora Hodgkinson found Charlie Powell in the box, whose quick feet fooled the covering defender, making space to drive the ball low into the net past the keeper for 8 – 0.
With 4 minutes left, Farnham’s passing game saw Roxy Cole find space in the box to side foot past the keeper for 9 – 0.
To round off an excellent team performance, another well flighted free kick from Lora Hodgkinson caused mayhem in the Mudeford box, Roxy Cole latching on to the loose ball to slam in her 2nd from 10 yards on the stroke of full time, giving a final score line of 10 – 0.
It was a comprehensive performance by Farnham, with some excellent possession and passing football. Farnham meet local rivals, Rushmoor Saints, at home at the Memorial Ground on Sunday 11th February, 2pm kick off.

28 Jan 2007 FTFC Ladies 6 - 0 Mudeford Phoenix (League)
Farnham Town Ladies consolidate 2nd position
Farnham Town Ladies continued their winning form, with their first game since mid-December by beating Mudeford Phoenix 6 – 0 at home on Sunday 28th January.
The lengthy lay off caused by the recent weather could have caused real problems, but despite a lack of competitive football a confident Farnham side dominated the match. A resolute display from the Mudeford keeper and some wayward finishing may have kept the score line down, but Farnham were clearly the stronger team.
Starting brightly, Emily Marchant was the first to test Mudeford, racing through on goal in the first minute, only to see her shot well held by the keeper. Left back Megan Powell joined in, with a typically powerful run leading to Farnham’s first corner of the match, cleared by the Mudeford defence.
The visitors were clearly struggling to contain the pace of Emily Marchant and Gemma McKeown who were linking well up the right. Constant pressure from Farnham saw good chances fall to both before Mudeford issued a wake up call; Debbie Woods clearing a dangerous ball after the offside trap was beaten on a rare foray forward by the beleaguered opposition.
On 22 minutes Farnham finally made their dominance count, Nikki Kelly receiving a slide rule pass from Charlie Powell and racing clear from the half way line and steering the ball around the keeper to take a 1 – 0 lead.
Farnham turned the screw, and were rewarded with a stunning second goal – man of the match Gemma McKeown meeting a Lora Hodgkinson free kick on the half volley and finding the top corner of the net from 25 yards on 28 minutes.
In an effort to contain Farnham, Mudeford then dropped too deep, allowing the home team the freedom of the park. A series of decent chances went begging before captain Debbie Woods clipped a clinical finish over the keeper and into the roof of the net to make it 3 – 0 just before half time.
Woods proved to be a thorn in Mudeford’s side, dominating the midfield throughout and driving in her second of the match on 47 minutes to make it 4 – 0. Barely five minutes later she struck her hat trick, finding the back of the net from outside the box for 5 – 0.
Roxy Cole and Shona Darby came on for Nikki Kelly and Charlie Powell, and both battled well at the front, not allowing Mudeford the time to build anything constructive.
A brief interlude saw the referee and Farnham manager discuss some of the finer points of Association Football rules, to the delight of the crowd - Mudeford seemed glad of the respite.
With Helen Slater and Ami Cheesman typically strong at the back, Lora Hodgkinson had the freedom to move forward, and a fine, mazy run saw her crudely brought down in the box for a penalty. Megan Powell stepped up to hit a solid shot, but the keeper managed to get a foot to the ball to keep it out.
Farnham piled on the pressure in the last 15 minutes, with Mel Miles taking the ball through a couple of defenders and getting a left footed shot away, across the keeper and into the bottom corner of the net for a 6 – 0 lead on 75 minutes. A game Mudeford had one further shot, dragged wide, before the full time whistle.

10 Dec 2006 Wey Valley Ladies 2 - 4 FTFC Ladies (League)
Farnham Town Ladies put 4 past Valley
Farnham Town Ladies continued their winning form, beating local rivals Wey Valley 4 – 2, away on Sunday 10th November.
A scrappy first half on a wet and heavy pitch developed into a midfield battle, illuminated by a tremendous solo goal from striker Emily Marchant. Picking the ball up in the midfield, Marchant skipped past the Valley defence to chip the keeper with a clinical finish. With chances at a premium and both teams prepared to battle, little headway was being made until Debbie Wood pounced on a fumble by the Valley keeper to slam the ball home with a classic poacher’s finish.
Farnham then lost concentration, and a fine run from the Valley forward saw her race past the defence to finish well under the keeper, making it 1 – 2.
Farnham responded well, putting increasing pressure on the Valley defence until Mel Miles found the back of the net with a shot from just outside the area, taking Farnham into a deserved half time lead.
The 2nd half was almost a repeat of the first, with Farnham playing high up the pitch and Valley looking to capitalise on the break – which brought dividends for them as they evaded a tackle in the left channel and beat the out coming Farnham keeper Lucie Spooner with a firm low shot to make it 2 – 3.
A series of corners and free kicks saw Farnham take the game back to Valley, and substitute Nikki Kelly eventually capitalised with a fine headed goal from a corner by Lora Hodkinson, to take Farnham into a 2 – 4 lead.
Farnham generally kept control of the game after that , and despite a late scare when a scrambled Valley shot struck the upright, only to be claimed on the line by Spooner, ended the game as 4 – 2 winners.
It wasn’t Farnham’s best performance, but given the long lay off and weather disrupted training, it was a dogged, deserved win, putting Farnham Town back into 2nd place behind Southampton Saints.

19 Nov 2006 FTFC Ladies 0 - 0 Southampton Saints Reserves (League)
Farnham Town Ladies take a point off Southampton Saints Reserves
Farnham Town Ladies held their own to be the first team to take points off Division 3 leaders Southampton Saints Reserves, with a 0 – 0 draw at home on Sunday 19th November.
Strong, battling performances from two teams tipped for the Div III title made for an enthralling match as Farnham and Southampton met for the second time this season. Having lost the first encounter to the odd goal in 7, Farnham were determined to compete for every ball and to impose themselves on a young, confident Southampton side. To their credit, Saints were just as prepared to run the hard yards and make the tackles, and a bruising, high-tempo encounter yielded what was, in the end, the right result.
A strong start from Farnham in their first home game of the season saw Farnham win a succession of corners, the Saints defence coping well with the pressure and forming the basis of a number of quick counter-attacks.
Claire Katoroz, playing up front, caused Saints a number of problems, and was unlucky not to score after good link up play with Charlie Powell put her through on goal – a fine save from the keeper denying her a first goal of the season. More pressure from Farnham saw Nikki Kelly go close before a quick break saw Saints denied by an excellent save from debut keeper Lucie Spooner.
The game then settled into a fairly regular pattern, with good moves from both sides eventually breaking down on two resolute defences. A couple of excellent chances went begging for both teams, with Farnham just about shading the first half.
Emily Marchant, switched out to the right wing to provide cover, started to get a grip on the game in the second half, creating a series of chances, carrying the ball well and turning the Saints defence on a number of occasions.
A couple of substitutions saw Roxy Cole bring some pace into the attack, and Hlengy Mkhezi adding some extra bite into the heavily contested midfield, but even this couldn’t force the breakthrough goal. Lora Hodgkinson was moved up to midfield for the final minutes and very nearly stole the show with a fine run from deep in the Farnham half that resulted in a blocked shot on the edge of the area.
At the other end Lucie Spooner turned in a man of the match performance, coming out quickly to claim on a number of occasions to keep out Saints, who probably had the best of the second half.
At the final whistle both teams could take credit from a thoroughly professional, hard fought performance. With a run of home games to come, Farnham will be looking to put pressure back on at the top of the table.
Farnham Town play Mudeford Phoenix at home on Sunday 26th November, at the Memorial Hall Ground at 2pm.

05 Nov 2006 Portsmouth University Ladies 10 - 0 FTFC Ladies (Hampshite Invitation Cup)
Farnham Town Ladies crash out of cup.
Farnham Town fail to ignite Portsmouth University Ladies in a Bonfire Night clash
Farnham Town Ladies failed to get started in their Hampshire Invitation Cup game against 1st division Portsmouth University, played in Southsea on the 5th November.
With their first attack, Portsmouth broke through the Farnham defence in only the 2nd minute, and put the ball low into the net to take a 1 – 0 lead. Farnham responded with a short spell of pressure, with Mel Miles forcing the keeper to make a clearance and Charlie Powell shooting wide with an overhead kick. After a Farnham free kick Portsmouth took possession and ran the length of the pitch before another low shot found the back of the net for Portsmouth to take a 2 – 0 lead on 13 minutes.
Emily Marchant made a run down the wing, taking a shot which the Portsmouth keeper did well to push wide, but Farnham were unable to find the net from th corner. Emma Legg then tried to find her way through the centre of the field, and Debbie Wood fired a shot high.
Portsmouth then took firm control of the game again, with a shot cleared off the line by Gemma McKeown, and couple of saves from Claire Hull. The Portsmouth continual pressure eventually paid off, with a good turn and shot in the box to make the score 3 – 0 on 33 minutes.
Farnham forced a throw-in from the kick-off, which Portsmouth cleared for a corner. Debbie Wood couldn’t make good contact with the ball and Portsmouth cleared the ball away from line, but Farnham were awarded a penalty. Megan Powell stepped up, and struck the ball, which came back off the upright and there were no other Farnham players able to put the ball away.
Gemma McKeown had to make another clearance off the line, Claire Hull made a good high save, and Mel Miles pushed the bar round the post to give Portsmouth another corner just before the half-time whistle, from which the ball found the net and Portsmouth had a 4 – 0 lead.
Portsmouth came out strongly for the 2nd half, and a collision between a couple of players left Farnham playing with only 10 on the field for a few minutes. Portsmouth took advantage and scored from another corner for a 5 – 0 lead on 53 minutes.
Farnham replied with shots by Emily Marchant, Nikki Kelly and Charlie Powell over the next few minutes, but none of them found the net. Portsmouth then shot high, over Claire Hull, on 50 minutes and 66minutes, finding the net on both occasions for a 7 – 0 score line.
Portsmouth then completely over-ran a despondent Farnham, taking shot after shot, and put away another 3 goals in 12 minutes for a convincing 10 – 0 win.
This was Farnham’s worst defeat, and they will be looking for an huge improvement in form when they play their next 2 league games, both at home. They will be playing top of the league Southampton Saints Reserves on 19th November, and bottom of the league Mudeford Phoenix on 26th November, both 2pm kick-offs at the Farnham Memorial Hall Ground.

22 Oct 2006 Widbrook United Ladies 3 - 6 FTFC Ladies (League)
Farnham Town Ladies put 6 past Widbrook to go top.
You don’t always get what you deserve in football – but most times you do, and Farnham Ladies certainly deserved to take all the points from this fixture with a good, hard working team display that featured more than a few moments of individual brilliance.
With terrible playing conditions on the South Coast, expectations for a decent game on a wind and rain lashed pitch were pretty low. Despite this, the spectators were treated to some free flowing, attacking football with both teams using the slick surface to good advantage. Widbrook started marginally the stronger, forcing keeper Claire Hull to make the first smart save of the game on just 3 minutes.
A couple of minutes later, some good work in the middle released Nikki Kelly, whose pace took her free of a static Widbrook defence to pull a shot just wide when one-on-one with the keeper. Widbrook, with the wind and rain at their backs, then had their best period of the game, keeping a resolute Farnham defence busy with a series of long balls flighted into the box coupled with some good work down the wings. With a fit-again Debbie Wood restored to the heart of defence alongside Lora Hodgkinson, Farnham were able to stand firm and were content to play on the counter-attack.
On 13 minutes, a Farnham free kick finally relieved the pressure. An alert Lora Hodgkinson took it quickly, releasing Charlie Powell in space on the left to drive into the box and lift the ball over the advancing keeper to take a 1 – 0 lead.
In an unwelcome return to an old frailty, Farnham were slow to respond to the resulting kick-off and were rocked when Widbrook scored a deserved equaliser on 16 minutes, turning a square ball from the right in at close range for 1 - 1. Still struggling against the wind, Farnham had a good effort from Powell to lob the keeper saved on the line before Widbrook then took the lead – a perfectly timed run from their forward breaking the Farnham offside trap before before coolly finishing past Hull.
Going behind galvanised Farnham, who really upped their game from that point. Roared on by the crowd and with most of the possession now theirs, pressure quickly mounted on the Widbrook defence. Lora Hodgkinson had another tremendous long range free kick palmed away by the Widbrook keeper, and Claire Katoroz put a shot just wide of the goal before Farnham won a decisive corner. A curling, inch perfect delivery from Charlie Powell saw Debbie Wood lash the ball into the back of the net from 6 yards to level the scores at 2 – 2 on 23 minutes.
Farnham continued to battle well in the mid-field and were unlucky not to score with a series of good chances. Then, on the stroke of half time, striker Emily Marchant continued her recent rich run of form, picking the ball up on the wing just inside her own half and leaving three defenders in her wake before stroking the ball past the Widbrook keeper for a 3 – 2 lead.
The torrential rain continued into the 2nd half, but Farnham now had the wind as well as the crowd behind them. A rare Widbrook corner was easily dealt with, and another mazy run from Marchant looked set to end in a fine solo goal before she was cynically brought down in the box. Man of the match Megan Powell, in another solid display, stepped up and casually stroked the ball into the bottom corner of the net for Farnham to lead 4 – 2.
The heavy pitch was now starting to take its toll on Widbrook, with Farnham looking quicker and stronger all over the park. Any rare advances Widbrook made down the flanks were comfortably dealt with by Gemma McKeown and Charlie Powell, while the new midfield pairing of Lucy Spooner and Clair Katoroz made sure that Farnham picked up anything loose in the middle.
Then, on 65 minutes, another desperate long clearance from Widbrook dropped to right back Ami Cheesman just inside her own half who, with time to steady herself, drove a perfect ball straight back into the box from 50 yards, beating the retreating Widbrook keeper with the bounce to take a well-deserved 5 – 2 lead.
Farnham kept piling on the pressure, with fresh legs in the middle with the introduction of Kelly May and Hlengy Mkhize making sure that Widbrook were penned into their own half. Even on their rare forays into Farnham territory, some superb, strong tackling from Mkhize ensured Widbrook couldn’t keep possession.
With Widbrook searching for a way back and trying to play slightly higher up the pitch, Emily Marchant was taking players on at will, and got a deserved second after another strong run down the wing saw her steer the ball past the keeper to make it 6 – 2 on 71 minutes.
Then, with the last kick of the game, Widbrook were gifted a penalty in controversial circumstances, with neither set of players seeming to think any infringement had taken place. Keeper Claire Hull managed to get both gloves to the well struck shot, but the wet ball slipped through her grasp to squirm over the line and give a final score line of 6 – 3 to Farnham Town Ladies.
This was another solid display from Farnham, which even their famously hard to please manager was happy with.
The result puts FTFC Ladies top of Hampshire County Women’s League, Division 3.

15 Oct 2006 FTFC Ladies 12 - 0 London United (Surrey Ladies' Cup)
Farnham Town Ladies Crush London United in the Surrey Cup 1st Round.
Farnham fielded a strong attacking line up in this Surrey Cup 1st round match, with the formation paying dividends as early as the opening minute when Nikki Kelly scored from the first attack after a well delivered cross from Mel Miles.
London United responded quickly, mounting a couple of probing attacks before conceding possession to Farnham. A quick counter attack saw a long ball from Nikki Kelly finding Charlie Powell in acres of space on the left. Powell cut into the box and fired low across the keeper to take a 2 – 0 lead. Before a stunned United could regroup Emily Marchant won the ball in midfield, making a strong run to the line and crossing for a well positioned Nikki Kelly to fire home from close range, bringing up a 3 – 0 lead within 10 minutes.
With damage limitation now in mind, United retreated into their own half, playing 10 behind the ball at all times as they looked to steady themselves. In doing this they gave Farnham the freedom of the park, and a switch to 3-5-2 followed by a period of intense pressure saw Emily Marchant, in another man of the match performance, capitalise by claiming her first hat trick of the season with 3 brilliantly taken goals in 15 minutes – springing the offside trap and keeping her cool to beat the keeper one-on-one.
With Farnham’s midfield pairing now completely dominating the centre of the park, and excellent work on both wings, Farnham soon racked up another, with Nikki Kelly confidently meeting another whipped in cross from Powell to claim her 2nd hat trick of the season and a 7 – 0 lead.
Farnham then eased off and a rare foray forward from United, coupled with a momentary lapse of concentration at the back, led to confusion in the box, and centre-back Helen Slater had to clear the ball off the line to spare Farnham’s blushes.
Now playing as left wing back, a flying Megan Powell picked up a loose ball and made a strong box to box run, riding a couple of heavy challenges before releasing a curling shot which struck the angle of bar and post. Battling for the rebound, Powell was crudely taken down in the box and Farnham were awarded a deserved penalty. A confident Powell stepped up and coolly put the ball to the right of the keeper for an 8 – 0 lead at half time.
The 2nd half saw a raft of quick substitutions as Farnham kept taking the game to a demoralised United, Emily Marchant again proving to be their tormentor with two quick goals to take her personal tally to 5 for the game, and a 10 – 0 lead.
Farnham substitute Roxy Coles was eventually rewarded for her hard work, battling to win the ball in the box and scoring her first of the season from close range for 11 – 0.
In time added on Farnham were awarded a free kick 25 yards out in a perfect position for dead ball specialist Lora Hodgkinson, who despite carrying a slight calf injury, hammered the ball into the top of the net for Farnham Town Ladies best result of 12 – 0.

08 Oct 2006 Team Solent 0 - 6 FTFC Ladies (League)
Farnham Town Ladies put 6 past Team Solent
Farnham Town Ladies played Team Solent on another windy Autumn day. Learning from previous slow starts, and back in a more familiar 4-4-2 formation, Farnham were quickly out of the blocks, immediately putting on pressure Team Solent with 4 attempts on goal in the first 10 minutes. Although Solent’s defence dug in well, the break-though came in the 14th minute, when man-of-the-match Emily Marchant laid a good square ball off to Mel Miles, just outside the area. Miles’ first time low shot beat the keeper at the foot of the post to give Farnham a well-deserved 1 – 0 lead.
Farnham began to take advantage of some hesitancy in the Solent full-backs to deliver a series of deep crosses into the box, bringing a number of fine saves from efforts by Nikki Kelly, Mel Miles, Charlie Powell and Emily Marchant. After 33 minutes it looked as if the failure to convert more chances would again cost Farnham dearly, with Solent finally putting some pressure on the Farnham defence, being rewarded with a free kick in a dangerous area. A well struck shot beat the 3 man wall and looked to be heading into the top corner, until a fine fingertip save from keeper Kelly May pushed the ball over the bar.
The close call woke Farnham up, and on 38 minutes Charlie Powell again beat her man to the line and crossed in from the left for Nikki Kelly to steer the ball in the back of the net, giving Farnham a 2 – 0 lead going into half time.
A switch to 3-5-2 for the 2nd half saw Farnham starting much the stronger, with a well worked move ending in a foul 30 yards from goal. Another long range free kick from Lora Hodgkin comfortably beat the keeper and looked to be heading in before Solent managed to scramble it away on the line. However, good following up by Nikki Kelly saw her put the loose ball away again for a 3 – 0 lead.
Now starting to buckle under the pressure, a poor Team Solent clearance from the next corner saw full back Megan Powell switching the play from left to right with a pin-point cross field pass to Gemma McKeown, whose accurate delivery into the box set up Nikki Kelly for her first hat-trick of the season, giving Farnham 4 – 0 lead.
Farnham were now knocking the ball around well, and further attempts from Emily Marchant, Charlie Powell, and substitutes Roxy Coles and Lucie Spooner were all somehow kept out of the net by some last ditch Solent defending. On 73 minutes they finally buckled, a long throw into the box from captain Emma Legg being confidently turned into the net to bring up a rare goal for midfielder Lucie Spooner, and a 5 – 0 lead.
With Solent still trying to regroup, good work out wide from Emily Marchant saw her beat the left back and deliver the perfect cross, Charlie Powell stooping to head the ball into the top corner of the net, making the score 6 – 0.
Farnham kept the defence tight and had further efforts on goal before the final whistle went, giving Farnham a deserved 6 – 0 win to move into 2nd in the table.

01 Oct 2006 Southhampton Saints Res 4 - 3 FTFC Ladies (League)
Farnham Town Ladies played Southampton Saints Reserves in an early season top of the table clash, on 1st October, on a very windy, but dry pitch in Hythe, Southampton.
Farnham failed to start on the whistle, and were immediately punished, finding themselves 1 – 0 down inside the first minute after conceding possession. This early wake-up call had Farnham pushing forward, taking the game to an organised and committed Saints team.
Charlie Powell soon forced a good save from the keeper , with Nikki Kelly also missing a good chance to level on 9 minutes. Just over 20 minutes in Powell scored directly from an in-swinging corner, beating the keeper at the near post to equalise at 1 – 1. Saints came back strongly, forcing Claire Hull into a good save on 33 minutes, when a high ball forward from Southampton Saints got caught by the wind and looked like it was going in.
With Farnham attacking again, Powell saw the keeper off her line and took a shot from 30 yards out, driving the ball over the retreating keeper and finding the back of the net to take a deserved 2 – 1 lead. Farnham piled on the pressure, Emily Marchant forcing a corner, which Mel Miles shot low across the mouth of the goal into the bottom corner for a 3 – 1 lead, with a couple of minutes of the 1st half left.
Just before half time, a lack of concentration gifted possession to Saints, who blasted the ball towards the back of the net; Claire Hull managed to get a touch but couldn’t keep it out. Farnham led 3 – 2 at half time.
The start of the 2nd half saw chances for both teams, with Debbie Wood just failing to convert a well delivered free kick from Lora Hodgkinson, before Saints cleared a Farnham corner up field, catching them short at the back and taking full advantage, driving the ball home to level the game at 3 – 3.
Another couple of chances for Farnham went begging before Mel Miles made a tremendous goal line clearance to keep the scores level.
On 85 minutes, with a draw looking likely between two well matched teams, a rash challenge in the middle of the park led to a Saints free kick. The delivery was perfect, causing confusion in the Farnham defence and leaving the Saints striker an easy tap in to take a 4 – 3 lead.
Farnham went searching for an equalizer, but couldn’t find a way through a well drilled Saints defence, the scores staying at 4 – 3 for the final whistle.
The result puts Southampton top, with Wey Valley second after their 2 – 1 win against Widbrook United, ahead of Farnham Town on goal difference.

01 Oct 2006 Rushmore Saints 1 - 3 FTFC Ladies (League)
The 2006 season for Farnham Town Ladies FC continued on 24th September, with a game against local rivals Rushmoor Saints.
Farnham started slowly, with a poor kick-off needing a good save from Claire Hull in the first minute. It took 5 minutes for Farnham Town to wake up, before Nikki Kelly’s shot went just wide of the post. As Farnham’s confidence increased on 9 minutes, Emily Marchant passed to Charlie Powell, who crossed into the box to N Kelly to back heel flick the ball over the Rushmoor keeper and into the top of the net (0 – 1).
C Hull had to make another good save, as Rushmoor turned up the pressure. On 23 minutes C Powell cleared from the box and put N Kelly through with an accurate long ball, which Kelly put into the bottom corner (0 – 2).
Rushmoor came back stronger again, forcing C Hull to make a save on the edge of the area, and then scrambling the ball into the net (1 – 2).
Farnham had 2 further on shots on goal before half time, with a header from Debbie Woods coming off the cross bar and another shot saved on the line. On 39 minutes E Legg was pulled down in the area and a penalty awarded. C Powell stepped up for the penalty and fired the ball towards the centre of the goal, the Rushmoor keeper pushed the ball over the cross bar.
The second half started slower, as the heat took effect. C Powell had a couple of shots, as well as N Kelly, but Farnham couldn’t find the back of the net.
A free kick was awarded to Farnham on 40 mins, which centre-back L Hodgkinson took. She struck the ball well, and it cleared Rushmoors 4-man wall and the keeper to hit the top corner of the back of the net.
It was another good solid performance from Farnham Town Ladies, who are now in their 3rd season.

08 Oct 2006 Team Solent 0 - 6 FTFC Ladies (League)
Farnham Town Ladies FC start off top
The 2006 season for Farnham Town Ladies FC (sponsored by the Farnham Herald) started with a trip to Mudeford Phoenix in the New Forest, on Sunday 10th September.
With temperatures hitting 25 degrees, and a pitch desperately in need of rain, it was always going to be a hard first game. Farnham started well, with a goal on 6 minutes from striker Nikki Kelly – a delicate chip over the stranded Mudeford keeper. Farnham piled on the pressure, with virtually all of the play in the next 30 minutes inside Mudeford’s half, but due to the unpredictability of the bounce on the dry, uneven pitch, were unable to convert another goal until 36 minutes, when left winger, Charlie Powell, managed to find the back of the net after persistently taking on the Mudeford defence. Farnham played some excellent passing and possession football and went in at half time 2 – 0 up.
Mudeford came out stronger in the 2nd half, taking a couple of shots on goal, which Claire Hull was easily able to handle. On 64 minutes Charlie Powell again found her way down the left side and powered a cross shot into the back of the net. Shortly after, Mudeford had a shot hit the up-right, before it was cleared.
On 87 minutes substitute striker Shona Darby got on the score sheet after more good work from Charlie Powell, as she dummied the keeper and passed across the goal mouth for Shona to find the back of the empty net.
It was a good solid performance from Farnham Town Ladies, who are now in their 3rd season, and looking stronger than ever before.
Final Result – Mudeford Phoenix 0 – 4 Farnham Town Ladies
